Happy New Year from Paine Field

A gold sparkler glows next to words "2024 Happy New Year" with the Paine Field official logo

As the year comes to a close, we extend our sincere wishes for a prosperous and successful New Year. May the coming months be marked by achievement, growth, and fulfillment in both your personal and professional endeavors.

In celebration of the New Year holiday, our administrative offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 1st. We will be back to serve you on Tuesday, Jan. 2nd.

The airfield, including passenger air service from the Seattle Paine Field Passenger Terminal, will remain operational. Airport Maintenance and Operations teams and the Air Traffic Control Tower will maintain regular hours.

If the need arises, Paine Field has 24/7 public safety presence provided by the Paine Field Fire Department and the Airport Police Unit of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office. For emergency public safety services, call 911.

Safety Corner: Pedestrians, cross at crosswalks, and drivers, mind your speed

A friendly reminder to all Paine Field users: Please remain vigilant for pedestrians and reduce your speed accordingly.

While Washington law affords pedestrians the right of way, it's crucial for pedestrians to exercise due care for their own safety. Please make use of the designated sidewalks and crosswalks when accessing the terminal or airfield. Several pedestrian crossings at Paine Field are equipped with flashing beacons that can be activated to alert drivers. Pedestrians are strongly encouraged to activate these signals before crossing.

For drivers, it's imperative to slow down! The speed limit on the airport's main roadways is 25 mph, unless otherwise indicated at a lower speed limit. Inside the air operations area, the speed limit is 15 mph, and it drops to 5 mph in close proximity to aircraft. Your cooperation ensures a safer environment for everyone at Paine Field.

Congressional action clears way for purchase of Air National Guard property

The recent passage of the National Defense Authorization Act by Congress has opened the door for Paine Field to acquire the 14-acre Air National Guard complex. Representative Rick Larsen, through an amendment in the bipartisan annual defense funding bill, facilitated the purchase of three key parcels.

“Thanks to this year’s National Defense Authorization Act, Snohomish County will be able to deliver more jobs and economic opportunity at Paine Field,” stated Rep. Rick Larsen.

“Paine Field Airport is the crown jewel of our region’s economy, generating over $60 billion yearly in economic impact and accounting for over 125,000 jobs,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers. “This transfer of land will allow for additional business activity at our aerospace cluster.”

While the acquisition is a culmination of more than 30 years of effort, Paine Field acknowledges the instrumental role played by its partners in Congress and the military.

"We extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated partners whose efforts played a pivotal role in acquiring this property and ensuring the growth of aerospace jobs in Snohomish County," said Terry Ryan, Snohomish County Aerospace Economic Development Director.

Paine Field Completes Terminal Ramp Project, Unveils 2024 Infrastructure Upgrades

Completed terminal area ramp project with new concrete poured and sealed with Boeing 777X aircraft in the background

In mid-November, we completed the Terminal Area Ramp Project, strengthening the center portion of the terminal ramp to handle increased loads from our growing fleet. We appreciate everyone's patience during this important summer and fall initiative.

In 2023, we also repaved key roadways—27th Pl W, 30th Ave W, and 31st Pl W—and upgraded sidewalks at C5, C70, and C71 in preparation for parking lot repaving in early 2024.

Looking forward to 2024, we have planned the rehabilitation of the East General Aviation ramp and Taxiway Foxtrot, addressing the Taxiway A-AA hotspot, designing the reconstruction of Phase II of Taxilane Echo, completing the demolition of buildings at the former TECT complex, finalizing the Airport Master Plan, and moving into our newly renovated administration building in the BOMARC area. Exciting developments are underway at Paine Field!

Successful Food Drive to support Hawthorne Elementary Weekend Backpack program

Paine Field maintenance staff display the results of the Hawthorne Elementary food drive on the school's stage.

In November, Paine Field Airport staff and local airfield businesses teamed up for a successful Food Drive. Thanks to your generosity, we filled our tour bus to the brim with essential weekend meal supplies for Hawthorne Elementary students and their families facing food insecurity during holiday breaks. Your support is making a direct and positive impact—thank you!

Nearly 90% of students attending Hawthorne Elementary School in North Everett rely on the free or reduced lunch assistance program. Unfortunately, on weekends, a significant number of these students go without meals. Over the past 15 years, Hawthorne Elementary School has been a beacon of hope through its "Weekend Food Backpack Program." This initiative entails providing backpacks filled with non-perishable meal supplies to children enrolled in the school lunch program so that they can have food over the weekend. Come Monday, the students return with their emptied backpacks, which are then refilled for the upcoming Friday.

If you would like to join the effort in 2024, please contact Christy Cheever at christy.cheever@snoco.org.

Engineering Team presents to Transportation Research Board

Kevin Latschaw, Engineering Manager, and Courtney Strehlow, GIS Analyst Senior, had the opportunity to present at a Transportation Research Board (TRB) Airport Geospatial Data and Technologies Subcommittee meeting. After developing the Geographic Information System (GIS) at Paine Field Airport, Kevin and Courtney were able to provide insights on the process through their presentation, called Takeoff- Implementing Esri Technology from an Airport Perspective. About 60 people from airports across the country attended the presentation. Several attendees were beginning their GIS development at their airports and asked questions about the process. The TRB is a part of the National Academies and provides leadership on transportation topics using industry expertise and objective, evidence-based information.

Airport staffers earn new designations from AAAE

Congratulations to the following Paine Field employees that recently earned their Certified Member (C.M.) designations from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE)!

  • Operations Specialist Nicholas Calhoun
  • Real Estate Specialist Michelle Funk
  • Accountant II Melissa Garrity
  • Airport Engineer Curtis Jasper
  • Airport Engineering Manager Kevin Latschaw
  • Maintenance Supervisor II Steve McLean
  • GIS Analyst Senior Courtney Strehlow

The C.M. designation signifies a diverse knowledge of the primary functions of how an airport operates. To become a C.M., a member must successfully complete a 180-question, multiple-choice examination on a wide variety of topics including airport operations, security, maintenance, financing, planning, construction, and communications.

Paine Field now has 17 employees that have achieved their C.M. designation.

We are also pleased to announce that Operations Specialist Gerard Checchia has recently received his ACE Airfield Operations from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).

The ACE Airfield Operations is based on a detailed set of informational modules that reflect information applicable to all FAR Part 139 airfields.  After reviewing the material candidates are required to pass a 100 multiple choice question exam with a score of 70% or higher.  The information helps shore up their strong understanding of airfield regulations and the numerous considerations related to our 139 certification, airfield construction, safety compliance and other topics.

Paine Field now has eight employees that have earned their ACE Airfield Operations designation.

Farewell to Matt Stevens and Mitch Braathen

Paine Field recently said farewell to longtime USDA Wildlife Biologist Matt Stevens, who recently accepted a new position with the USDA in Texas. Since 1989, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Wildlife Services (WS) program has partnered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Defense, airports and the aviation industry to provide scientific expertise and operational assistance to reduce the safety hazards and economic impacts to aviation caused by birds, mammals, and other wildlife.

Matt has been Paine Field’s primary wildlife Biologist for over 20 years. He brought the airport’s wildlife management program into the modern age, providing consultation and management assistance to assess wildlife conflicts at Paine Field, with a focus on improving safety by reducing hazards and risks associated with wildlife. Paine Field will continue to benefit from Matt’s leadership and expertise for years to come, as he personally trained his successor. Matt’s depth of knowledge will be sorely missed by our entire team. We wish him all the best in his new adventures.

The Paine Field team extends best wishes to Mitch Braathen, Accounting Projects Specialist, as he embarks on a new journey with Snohomish County's Information Technology Department starting January 2024. Thank you, Mitch, for your dedicated five-plus years at the Airport, where you played a pivotal role in handling high-priority projects for the Administration and Finance divisions. Congratulations!
