Public Input Sought on Affordable Housing and Community Development Needs

Interested persons are invited to provide input on local community needs for affordable housing, public facilities, infrastructure, public services and economic development projects to be funded with 2022 federal grant funds and to provide input on 2020 grant performance.

Snohomish County, in consortium with 19 cities and towns within the County, receives approximately $5 million in related federal funds each year.  The grant funds help support local affordable housing, public facilities, infrastructure, public services, and economic development projects that benefit low-to-moderate income persons and neighborhoods.

The use of these grant funds is guided by a five-year 2020-2024 Consolidated Plan, which establishes goals based on community needs. Each year, Snohomish County, as lead agency of the consortium, is required to develop an Action Plan for use of these funds.  The 2022 Action Plan will cover the period between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.

The Virtual Public Hearings are scheduled for Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. For more information and to participate in the public hearings,  please visit:

https://www.snohomishcountywa.gov/5645/Consolidated-Plan-for-2020-2024

Snohomish County will also accept written comments.  Comments may be sent to Debra May at debra.may@snoco.org or by mail at Snohomish County Human Services Department – OHCD, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., M/S 305, Everett, WA 98201.

Help Redesign Bus Network for the Arrival of Light Rail

Community Transit is asking for help from people who live and travel in Snohomish County in redesigning local bus service to better serve the county when light rail reaches Lynnwood, Mountlake Terrace and Shoreline in 2024.

The online survey, available in five languages, will be open through December 17:

When Sound Transit light rail arrives in Snohomish County, Community Transit will no longer run buses to Northgate or downtown Seattle because light rail will provide more capacity and faster trips. This creates an opportunity for the agency to look at new bus routes and increased frequency on existing routes within the county. A third bus rapid transit line between Edmonds College and Mill Creek, the Swift Orange Line, will connect to light rail and add capacity to the county transportation network. Community Transit is asking for public input on these topics:

  • Areas where more bus service should be added,
  • Which days and times need additional bus service, and
  • Key barriers to transit use.

Community Transit will use this feedback to design a detailed bus network and will make a proposed plan available for public comment in spring 2022. Changes to service will be made in phases in 2023-24.

Cold Weather Shelters

There are several Cold Weather Shelters that will be activated on nights when the temperatures are expected to drop below freezing. The cold weather shelters are operated by local organizations, volunteer groups, and faith-based organizations committed to helping those who are unsheltered. The cold weather season typically begins in November and can last through March of the following year. There are real time updates available online that show expected weather conditions, what shelters are currently available, other public safety information, and a search tool to find shelter locations.  Young people aged 12-17 who are in need of shelter can also call 425-877-5171.
