The COVID case rate in Snohomish County has increased for the fifth week in a row, and this one was a steep climb. The rate is now up to 198 per 100,000 population for the most recent rolling two-week period. This is nearly triple the rate we were at five weeks ago.
In yesterday’s virtual briefing, Executive Somers and Dr. Spitters provided updates on COVID that help answer that question as to why cases and hospitalizations are increasing.
Among the factors to consider: the highly contagious Delta variant is spreading, not enough people are masking up in public indoor settings, and about a third of the eligible population in the county has not started COVID vaccination despite vaccines being widely available.
“It’s just something that we have to do as a community, a county, a state, and a nation, and a world to get through to the other end of this,” Dr. Spitters said.

The latest COVID-19 surge in cases brought on by the highly-contagious delta variant and causing serious illness in unvaccinated people is straining Washington state’s health care system, officials said.
The unvaccinated continue to make up nearly all of the new cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
Washington State Hospital Association officials held a briefing Monday led by CEO Cassie Sauer, who was joined by Dr. John Lynch of UW Medicine and Florence Chang, executive vice president and COO of MultiCare Health System, KING-5 reported.

It is always a good idea to carry a mask with you. Even if you're fully vaccinated, you could come across environments and businesses that require you to mask up. #maskupwa
