Behavioral Health Facility Opens at Denney Juvenile Justice Center

A new North Sound Behavioral Health facility opened to patients this week at the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett. This state-of-the-art facility will give the county another set of tools to address mental illness, addiction, and challenges related to the opioid epidemic.  It will have two units, totaling 32 beds: One unit (16 beds) will focus on adults with a primary addiction to opioids, while the other unit (16 beds) is designed to treat adults with addiction issues and mental health needs.

The Denney project has had many stakeholders and partners, including Snohomish County Superior Court, Snohomish County Human Services, North Sound Behavioral Health Organization, and Pioneer Human Services, who are operating in the new facility. The renovation of the facility was funded by an $11.37 million appropriation from the State Legislature to the Department of Commerce and $3.34 million from North Sound Behavioral Health Organization. The County Council added $2.8 million in funding, for a total budget of $17.51 million.

Input Sought on Solid and Hazardous Waste Plan

The current preliminary Snohomish County Comprehensive Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Plan is an update to the previous plan that was prepared in 2013. Periodic updates to county solid waste plans are required by Washington State law. This plan was prepared with the assistance of the County’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee that included representatives of the cities and towns in Snohomish County, as well as citizens and business representatives and other stakeholders. The intent of this plan is to guide solid waste activities, including recycling, waste collection and disposal.

The preliminary review copy of the Comprehensive Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Plan is now available.  The public is encouraged to review the plan and submit comments on this plan by Friday, August 13th at 5pm.

This plan is also being reviewed by the Washington Department of Ecology and other state agencies. Comments received from all sources will be considered in the production of the next draft, which will be prepared later this year and then offered for adoption by the participating cities, towns, and Snohomish County.

Please submit your comments on the plan to Jo-Anne Antoun by 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2021. Jo-Anne may be reached at jo-anne.antoun@snoco.org

Taste Edmonds

Taste Edmonds will return August 20th - 22nd, featuring live music, food trucks, beer and wine bars, and games.  Due to construction in the traditional location, the event has moved to the Francis Anderson Center Field, at 700 Main St., in Edmonds.  Due to the change of venue, daily capacity has been reduced, but those who purchase tickets in advance will be guaranteed entry.

This event also raises funds for free community events enjoyed throughout the year, such as the 4th of July Parade and Fireworks Show, Classic Car and Motorcycle Show, the Halloween Tick-or-Treat Night, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Tickets and information can be found at the Taste Edmonds website.

Evergreen State Fair

The 2021 Evergreen State Fair is a few weeks away and all involved are hard at work on the finishing touches. Some of the things you will not want to miss this year include:

  • Discount gate admission, Carnival Wristbands, and a Weekday Round-up package great ways to save. They are on sale now through August 25. For Fair Time Tickets visit: etix.com
  • Evergreen Speedway will have three Monster Truck shows with Megasaurus, a Sprint Car series and of course, DEMO DERBY! Tickets on sale after Aug 2nd.
  • Indoor vendors will be located in the Event Center this year, with a lot of open space to shop.
  • Evergreen Marketplace is an artisan market of items made in Washington. It will be located in the Display Hall along with other wonderful displays.

The Fair may look a little different this year, with a mix of annual tradition, some new elements, and a community that has not come together to celebrate since 2019.  We hope you join us August 26-31 & Sept 2-6th, in Monroe.
