It was a privilege to honor Kirke Sievers for everything he and his father have given to Snohomish County.  This is Kirke’s 44th year of public service with Snohomish County government.

Snohomish County is blessed to have many great employees.  Kirke Sievers is on another level, a higher plain.  He is an elected official, leader, mentor and through time, has become an institution here in Snohomish County.  It is fitting to name the plaza after Kirke and his dad, two great public servants.

Kirke, I admire you.  Thank you for all of your guidance, helpful words of wisdom, kindness, leadership and most of all, your friendship.  It is a joy to work with you.

Fireworks will be on November Ballot

Since I joined the County Council in 2014, the Council has received public comment both in favor of and against Snohomish County revising the current County Code regarding fireworks.

On June 13, 2019, South Snohomish County Fire and Rescue Regional Fire Authority submitted a petition to the Council requesting the consideration of a no-fireworks area in the unincorporated area of their south Snohomish County jurisdiction.

Based on the feedback from the public, the Council is placing a non-binding advisory vote on the November 5th ballot to be voted on by all qualified voters in Snohomish County.  This is not in and of itself a ban.  Rather the County Council is asking residents if they would like a ban in their area of the county.  The results of the vote will provide the Council with insight into possible future action.

The non-binding advisory vote will not impact incorporated cities.  Cities make their own laws regarding fireworks.

A public hearing for the South Snohomish County Fire and Rescue Regional Fire Authority petition will be scheduled following the results of the November 5th ballot.  A Public Hearing is required by the County Code.

When in doubt, throw it out!

Recycling Republic Poster

Overall, we in Snohomish County do an excellent job of recycling.  Unfortunately, the rules are being changed and we need to adjust.

Much of our waste is shipped to China for recycling.  They have stopped accepting contaminated waste.  What does that mean?  If they open a 40 ft container filled with recycled material and see one piece of contamination, the entire container is rejected.  99.5% can be clean, reusable material but that one pizza box contaminated the entire load.

Items not to recycle: Materials like pizza boxes, used paper plates, napkins, paper towels, and jars with food residue should not be put in a recycling bin. While the materials themselves are recyclable, once they are contaminated with food they are useless. Diapers are a definite no.  Also aluminum foil, light bulbs, capped water bottles (remove the cap, please), hangers, styrofoam, packing peanuts, aerosol cans, plastic bags,

The new rule is if you are uncertain for any reason about the recyclability of an item, toss it out!

Help us to help our environment.  When in doubt, toss it out!

National Night Out August 6!

National Night Out Image of Officer and Child

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.  It is an opportunity to promote crime awareness programs such as Neighborhood Community Watch groups.

P3 – Economic Development Conference

P3 Conference Panel

Conference Panel

Councilmember Sam Low and I attended the 2019 P3 (Public Private Partnership) Airport Summit in San Diego last month.  Over 1,000 airport representatives and industry leaders attended.

Public private partnerships have seen much recent success in delivering critical infrastructure across the country.  As some airports face challenges in finding ways to enhance their capacity to fund and construct major expansion or even maintain needed infrastructure, many are looking to P3's as an opportunity to facilitate growth.

The best example of a successful public private partnership is our new terminal at Paine Field.  Snohomish County partnered with Brett Smith and Propeller Airports to build a beautiful new terminal.

This was a very worthwhile conference as I continue to work to bring family wage jobs to Snohomish County.

Snohomish County wins first place Digital Survey Award

This month, the Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association for Counties (NACo) announced the winners of the 17th annual Digital Counties Survey. Snohomish County won first place in the 500,000-999,999 population category.

Snohomish County received the award for its innovative solutions to the challenges faced by local government. Snohomish County adopted a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy to keep data more secure and protect the continuity of government operations. In addition, the County’s annual Information Services Plan and Report is a model for other counties.

Congratulations to our IT team for a job well done!

I was pleased to present Brier with a check for $10,000 to prepare a book describing the founding and first fifty years of Brier’s history.  The funds will be used to work with local historical societies and other sources to obtain photographs and other materials.  The City also plans to partner with the Lynnwood/Alderwood Manor Heritage Association to benefit from their expertise in editing and producing this type of publication.  The completed book will be a warm reminder of Brier’s unique history as well as an asset to researchers and others seeking knowledge of our region’s history.

Congratulations to Brier for qualifying for the grant.  I look forward to reading the book!
