District 4 Night Meeting
The Snohomish County Council will hold an open public meeting at Mill Creek City Hall in the council chambers at 6pm on Monday, February 4. The Council holds public comment at the beginning of each meeting. Members of the public can address the council on agenda items or other county concerns.
Annual district meetings are required by the Snohomish County Charter. Meetings are scheduled for District 1 on March 25 in the Stanwood-Camano School District Office and District 5 in the Startup Events Center on April 8. Night meetings begin at 6pm. No date or locations have been set for Districts 2 and 3 yet.
The public is encouraged to attend.
County Council news
The County Council elected me to serve as Chairman of the County Council for 2019. I am honored to have the privilege of leading the County Council again. Our Council also elected Nate Nehring to serve as Vice-Chair this year. Nate is a Republican.
Usually, the County Council rotates the Chair and Vice-Chair positions with members of the majority party. (Our Council has three Democrats and two Republicans.) The 2018 Vice-Chair, Brian Sullivan, would normally rotate into the Chair position the following year. However, Councilmember Sullivan is term-limited and he is also running for another office this year.
These unique circumstances of Councilmember Sullivan being term-limited created an opportunity for our Council. An opportunity to show everyone that Democrats and Republicans can work together to get things done for the County. I discussed this opportunity with Nate and he agreed. So, the majority of the County Council approved it.
With all the political gridlock playing out across the country, this was a stunning display of bi-partisanship.
Our goal should always be to work together for the betterment of Snohomish County. I am looking forward to working with Nate, our Council and the County Executive to make 2019 another good year for Snohomish County and our citizens.

Boeing KC-46A Pegasus
I was honored to be invited to attend both the delivery ceremony and Fly Away of the first Boeing KC-46A Pegasus tanker. The Boeing KC-46A is a military aerial refueling and strategic military transport aircraft developed from Boeings 767 line. The tanker was selected February 2011 by the US Air Force to replace the older Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker. The first tanker was delivered on Thursday, January 24th, 2019.
Thank you to Boeing for both its continuing business investment in our County and State as well as its community contributions to assist the residents of Snohomish County!
Alaska Air Group (AAG) welcomed its 10,000th Washington state employee this November. Additionally, they are looking to add 3,000 more in 2019. Three-quarters of the new jobs will reside in Washington State. A majority of the new jobs, which will be posted online, do not require previous airline experience.
The impact on Washington’s economy totaled over $7 billion in 2017.
Report highlights:
- In 2017 alone, AAG operations contributed to 23,500+ jobs across the state.
- The total employment impact in Washington increased 42 percent over the past five years.
- AAG spent nearly $2.4 billion on Boeing planes over the past five years, which created an additional $3.4 billion in economic activity in Washington.
- Of the $15.5 million AAG donated to charity in 2017, $8 million went to charities in Washington State.

 Terry and Mayor Jerry Smith
Mountlake Terrace Mayor Jerry Smith passed away peacefully on December 14, 2018. We were all saddened and shocked to lose such a great public figure.
Mayor Smith served on the Mountlake Terrace City Council from 2001 – 2018. His Council elected Jerry as Mayor from 2004 - 2018. Jerry was a pillar in Mountlake Terrace and recognized as a regional leader having served on 16 boards and committees.
I met Jerry when we were both Mayors of our cities. We shared many common interests and quickly became friends. Through the years I would seek his advice. Jerry was always kind, thoughtful, had a great sense of humor and always found a way to “get it done” (no matter what the task was).
Jerry loved his city dearly. He was one of a kind, hard-working, always true to his word, and was very careful with the city’s budget.
Thank you, Mayor Jerry Smith, for all the kindness, support and friendship that you gave to me!
I pray that our loving God will hold Jerry in the palm of His hand, and close to His heart. Needless to say, I believe Jerry will be running many boards and committees in Heaven!
You have probably seen the new Community Transit Swift Green Line Stations being built on the Bothell-Everett Highway. This new Swift Green Line will run from Canyon Park along the Bothell Everett Highway, then turn west on 128th ST and continue on to the Seaway Transit Center (Across the street from Boeing in Everett.)
The Swift Green Line begins service between Canyon Park/Bothell and Boeing/Paine Field on March 24, 2019! Swift buses will run every 10 minutes on weekdays, and every 20 minutes early mornings, nights and on weekends.
Swift bus rapid transit is different than regular local bus service. Customers pay their fares at the station. When the bus arrives, all doors open and passengers get on and off the bus in about 10 seconds. That’s Swift!
Swift Green Line will connect with Swift Blue Line at Highway 99 & Airport Road. This establishes Snohomish County’s first high-capacity transit network, which will eventually include more Swift lines and Link light rail. (Source- Community Transit website)
This will offer a great way to get to work at Canyon Park or Boeing every day!

I appreciated the invitation to watch as the final beam of the new Hotel Indigo was set, topping off the first private development at the Port of Everett’s Waterfront Place Central in Fisherman’s Harbor. Port and local government officials joined project partners to commemorate this milestone by recognizing the labor of the Ferguson Construction crew and signing the beam before it was hoisted into position.
The 98,000 square foot Hotel Indigo is set to open in June 2019.
 Councilmembers Mark Bond, John Steckler, Vincent Cavaleri, Mayor Pam Pruitt, Council Chair Terry Ryan, Mayor Pro Tem Brian Holtzclaw and Councilmember Mike Todd.
Partnering with cities, schools, nonprofits, etc. is a way of building the facilities we need and share. On January 11, I presented a check to the City of Mill Creek for $100,000 to help complete the Northpointe Exploration Park. This project is slated for completion in 2019.
Snohomish County District 4 is currently seeking board members for the Arts Commission and Fair Board. Applicants must live in my council district.
Arts Commission
The Snohomish County Arts commission was created by the Snohomish County Council in July 2004 to: Advocate for the arts as a part of Snohomish County’s culture, recommend an annual arts program, recommend criteria for selection of any artist or art work to be funded through the arts program, provide reports on recommended acquisitions of artwork, recommend the public site(s) for installation or performance of public art, advise on maintenance, conservation, etc., make funding recommendations for specific works of art, seek private or public donations and grants for the arts program, and provide an annual written report describing the commission’s activities and the arts program. Evergreen State Fair Advisory Board
The Fair Advisory Board is composed of eleven members, five representing the Council district in which they live, and six at-large members who may live anywhere in the county. The board meets at least monthly and represents a broad range of interests. It was created to advise, consult and assist the Fair Manager in the operation and maintenance of the Evergreen State Fair. Members serve four-year terms and are limited to three consecutive full terms. Contact Hal Gausman at 360-805-6729.

Mountlake Terrace
 The Seattle Junior Hockey Association is hosting their annual youth hockey tournament at the Olympic View Ice Arena. Teams in the 10U A, B and C divisions will compete over the three days with a four game guarantee in a Round Robin format. All games at the 10U division will be played half ice. The tournament is sanctioned by USA Hockey.

Try Hockey For Free Day!
Olympic View Arena
This event is designed to provide kids, between the ages of 4 to 9, a completely free experience to try youth hockey. A limited amount of equipment is available to borrow. Our top coaches will be on the ice to assist your child in learning the basics. Your son or daughter does not need any previous skating or hockey experience.
