Mariner Community Campus Partners Project Launch
 The greater Mariner-area community in unincorporated Snohomish County currently has the population of a small city and is expected to grow 20% over the next 5-7 years. This area has been identified by Sno-Isle Library, the County and other stakeholder groups as an underserved population.
Discussions began with finding a permanent home for the popular storefront library that opened 2017 and quickly drew 80,000 visits from Mariner residents, as well as those living in nearby areas. Stakeholder groups began to see a larger opportunity to site a number of service providers in a single location that would provide the community with integrated and high-quality services that reinforce healthy families and a strong community by providing free and equal access to resources and technology, community opportunities, social equity, and meet the basic needs of all residents.
A grant from the state’s 2018 Capital Budget has provided the funds necessary to begin the planning stage for a Mariner Community Campus, and the partner group will continue to meet and guide this process.
2019 Budget Hearing
On Monday, November 19th, the County Council will hold their 2019 Budget Hearing, which will provide an additional opportunity for residents and advocates to weigh in with their concerns and what they would like to see prioritized by the recommended budget. The council may adopt the recommended budget at the conclusion of this meeting or request additional time to consider new matters raised that day. As with all council meetings, there will be a designated time set aside for public comment. The meeting begins at 9am and will be held in council chambers, on the 8th floor of the Admin East building (Drewel Building) on the county campus.
In October, Moody’s Investors Service upgraded Snohomish County’s bond rating from Aa1 to Aa2, which is the second-highest available score. This rating change reflects stable management and healthy financial policies from the County, and should lower future borrowing costs. We take our fiscal responsibilities seriously, and the Moody’s upgrade confirms our work is bearing fruit. Wise management of public dollars is what enables the County to address public safety issues, homelessness, and infrastructure improvements that make our neighborhoods safer and improve the quality of life for everyone.
The public is invited to learn more about the county’s efforts to prepare the unincorporated areas near I-5 and 128th St (in Mariner,) as well as I-5 and 164th St. (near Ash Way) for the arrival of light rail. An online open house has been launched to provide information on the project background, purpose and timeline; criteria the county is using to evaluate possible station locations; to review the three possible station locations for each station area; and to answer questions about the preferred location for each. The open house will remain active until November 30, 2018.
Edmonds Community College will be celebrating the service and commitment of our armed forces during their 2018 Veterans Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 7th, from 10:30am to 1pm. The ceremony will be held in the Black Box Theatre located in Mukilteo Hall at 20310 – 68th Ave W, Lynnwood. This year’s ceremony will include a special tribute to mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of WWI.
Join the Veterans of Foreign War Post 1040, the City of Lynnwood and the Northwest Junior Pipe Band for their annual Veterans Day Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at Veterans Park, at 44th Ave West and Veterans Way (194th Street SW) on Saturday, November 11th at 11am.
The drainage and intersection improvements project at Maple Rd. and Ash Way has been completed ahead of schedule and under-budget, as 700ft. of Maple and 600ft. of Ash were raised approximately 5ft. to ease the chronic flooding which resulted in closures during the Fall and Winter seasons.
The intersection was originally scheduled to open during the second week of November to relieve traffic pressure during the holiday season, but close again in Spring 2019 for additional construction to complete the project. The early completion will render addition closure unnecessary. This was an important project for area residents, commuters, and businesses, and was a joint project between Snohomish County and the City of Lynnwood. Being able to solve the flooding issues, and to do so ahead of schedule, was truly a great outcome.
A ribbon cutting celebration will be held Wednesday, November 7th at 1:30pm, on the south spur of the Maple Rd. and Ash Way intersection.
An extension has been granted for the full road closure on Shelby Rd. at Highway 99, which will continue until November 12th to construct the water line installation. During the full road closure, all traffic onto Shelby Rd. will be detoured to 148th St. SW. Detour routes will be posted. More information can be found at the Roads Central page online.
