County Budget Update
The County Council is reviewing the County Executive’s recommended 2019 budget. The County Executive proposed a $983 million budget that is largely a “status quo” budget with no major changes from the Council’s 2018 budget.
The Snohomish County Charter gives all final budget authority to the County Council. Our role is simple - review the Executive’s proposed budget. We can approve, amend or completely rewrite the budget. We have amended or rewritten every budget in my four years at the county.
Our Council met with each department over the last two weeks regarding their individual budget requests. Our analysts are carefully reviewing the proposed budget and will share their conclusions with the council in meetings over the next several weeks.
Based on conversations I have had with residents in our district, I am focusing on these areas:
- Public Safety.
- Invest more funding for local transportation projects to improve traffic flow.
- Continue our efforts to combat the heroin epidemic and homeless situation.
- Increase our Economic Development efforts to bring more businesses and family wage jobs to Snohomish County.
The final Council budget must be balanced, fiscally responsible and sustainable. I will work with our Council to pass a budget that addresses our needs without mortgaging our future. Council will likely approve our final budget on Monday, November 19th.
Veteran's Day
Veteran’s Day is the day we honor our military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Mill Creek will have two events on Saturday, November 10th to honor our Veterans:
- 9 AM flag raising ceremony at the Veteran’s Monument in Library Park, and
- 11 AM parade through the Mill Creek Town Center
Let’s show our honor and respect for the sacrifices our Veterans and their families make for us. We owe these men and women of our nation’s Armed Forces a deep debt of gratitude. Our very freedom, life, liberty, justice and values are secured by the dedication of our Armed Forces. Thank you to our Veterans! God bless you!
The Matt Hirvela Bicentennial Park is an excellent example of how partnerships can accomplish a community project that is too big for any one group.
Paving completed in September 2018!
A paved path was needed all the way around the park. The City did not have enough money to complete the project. Through the combined efforts of Girl Scout Troop 4752, Eagle Scout candidates, the City of Mountlake Terrace and Snohomish County, the project was completed in phases from 2010 - 2018.
Snohomish County SCPP Grant for final paving phase partnering with Girl Scout Troop 43752
I am proud to be part of the funding for this project through the Snohomish County Small Capital Projects Partnerships grants. Thank you to the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the many volunteers who worked together for the betterment of their community!
Congratulations to all involved!!!
Thanksgiving is a national holiday and a time of reflection about the many blessings in our lives. We have so much to be thankful for - our families, friends and living in a beautiful part of our country. Best wishes this Thanksgiving from our family to yours!

Planning and Development Services, Public Works, Parks, Recreation and Tourism and Human Services are proactively planning for the extension of light rail past Lynnwood in the mid-2030s. This project is providing station area planning for light rail stations at Interstate 5 and 164th St (Ash Way) and Interstate 5 and 128th St (Mariner). The project will also include developing a subarea plan for the broader unincorporated urban core area between the cities of Everett, Lynnwood, Mill Creek and Mukilteo.
A second online open house will go live on October 31 and be available for the public to participate until November 30. The online open house replicates an in-person open house within a mobile-friendly online tool. Users can visit the webpage, view information at intuitively-designed “stations,” engage with interactive features, and provide focused feedback throughout the extended timeframe. Through the Light Rail Communities online open house the public will be able to:
- Learn about the project background, purpose and timeline.
- Provide input on which light rail station location they prefer.
- Find out about public involvement opportunities and how to stay informed.

I was honored to present Mill Creek with a $50,000 grant for reconstruction of 35th Avenue SE. This project will help improve transportation as a whole in our county as 35th is an important north/south corridor. Snohomish County is also working on improvements on 35th from Seattle Hill Road to SR 524.
