County Courthouse
The County Executive, Dave Somers, asked the Council to
approve his plan to remodel and expand the existing courthouse as opposed to
building a new courthouse. We agreed to the remodel/expansion based on
consistent assurances that the project would stay within budget.
I received a briefing that the bids for the courthouse
remodel/expansion came in $4.6 million over budget. This was extremely
disappointing and surprising since the Executive’s office consistently told the Council that the project was “on time and on budget” at every courthouse
update for the past 18 months! In fact, I specifically asked about the courthouse budget because commercial construction expenses have been escalating faster in the Puget Sound
area (which includes us). Council was told the courthouse contingency budget
should cover those costs.
Needless to say, I have asked the Executive’s Office how
they intend to pay for the cost overruns. I have publicly stated that I will not vote for any new tax to pay for any of the courthouse cost overruns. Possible options include scaling the project back or cutting
other expenses in the county budget.
I am working with the Council and the Executive to find a path forward on this project. I will keep you updated.
It's Time to go to the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe!!!
Each
year I look forward to attending the 12-day Evergreen State Fair in Monroe
which opens on Thursday, August 23. Our Fair is the largest county fair
in the Pacific Northwest and the largest single attraction held annually in
Snohomish County. It’s just the right size to have something different for each
member of the family and still have that County Fair feel. For more
information visit https://www.evergreenfair.org.
I
will be at the Fair several times over the 12 days. Please feel free to
come up and say hello. I love talking with fellow fair-goers!
For
your convenience, Community Transit is running buses directly to the West Gate
entrance at the Fairgrounds during the Fair so there is no need to stress with
traffic or parking. The fairgrounds are served by Community Transit Routes
270/271, with all day connections to Everett and Snohomish Park & Rides and transfers to points south.
Adult
fares are $2.25, youth fares (6-18) are $1.50 and senior/disabled/Medicare
residents can ride for $1 with a reduced fare pass. If you pay by cash, please
bring exact change. You can also pick up an ORCA fare card at a
participating Safeway or QFC store and get a two-hour transfer with your
ride.

National Night Out is held the first Tuesday of
August. It is an annual
community building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and
neighborhood camaraderie to make neighborhoods safer, more caring, places to
live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law
enforcement. It also provides a
great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive
circumstances.
District locations:
Snohomish County: Willis
Tucker Community Park 5 - 8 PM
Live music, free hot dogs, corn on the cob, and lemonade! Sheriff's Office
helicopter, motorcycles, boats and more, plus fire trucks and other emergency
response vehicles will be onsite.
Brier: This year, due to the same week being scheduled for our SeaScare parade, National Night
Out activities in Brier Park are canceled in favor of a traditional
celebration. The City encourages residents to turn on their porch lights
and go out to meet their neighbors in the name of crime prevention.
The Brier Police Department, in partnership with the Regional Fire Department
and other City departments is encouraging residents to organize neighborhood
events that will bring neighbors together. Neighborhood activities could
include a community "block party", which could be as simple as a
dessert potluck in a garage or a barbecue gathering in a driveway.
Mill Creek: 5:30 - 8:30 PM Pine Meadow Park, 15803 32nd Ave SE, Mill Creek (corner of 157th
Place SE and 32nd Avenue SE) Family Fun, Games, Crime Prevention
Mountlake Terrace:
The City of Mountlake Terrace has its annual award-winning National
Night Out Against Crime event at 6 PM at Evergreen Playfield, 22205 56th
Avenue West.
This free, family-friendly event combines entertainment, food, and community
involvement, for a fun-filled evening. Entertainment includes music, bouncy
house, caricature artist, free food and more!
Citizens can meet city officials, learn about local businesses and service
organizations, and celebrate with neighbors.
Councilmember Sean Richards, Mayor Pro Tem Kyoko Matsumoto Wright, Councilmember Rick Ryan, Terry, Mayor Jerry Smith, Councilmembers Laura Sonmore and Bryan Wahl
At the July 2 meeting of the Mountlake Terrace City
Council, I was honored to present the City with a ceremonial check for $80,000
to help with the ADA Accessible Ramp/Sidewalk Project at 214th St. SW & 40th
Ave. W to 44th Ave. W. I’m proud Snohomish County is able to partner with Mountlake Terrace on this important project.
I was honored to attend a ceremony to honor our Veterans
for their service during the Korean War. Over 60 veterans were presented
with the Ambassador for Peace Medal and a certificate on July 23, 2018 by
Consul General Lee, Hyung-jong of the Consulate General of the Republic of
Korea. The medals are in appreciation from the Korean government to
American service men and women without which Korea might not exist. Thank
you also to the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs who sponsored
the luncheon.
To all our Veterans, thank you and God bless you!
It’s official—the
reconstruction of 35th Ave SE through Mill Creek is underway! The
road is expect to be closed for several months while a new road is built over
hundreds of pin piles that will be pounded into the bedrock. Over 15,000
cars daily use the road that has been sinking and flooding for decades.
The fix should allow the road to remain open year-round.
Thanks to the efforts of State Senator Steve Hobbs, most of the funding for this project was provided by the State of Washington ($5.3 million), the City of Mill Creek ($1 million) and Snohomish County.
Over the next few years, Snohomish County is working to
improve 35th Avenue south of Seattle Hill Rd. Phase 1 from 152nd St. SE to 180th St. SE is underway. Construction began June 4 and is
expected to be completed by the end of 2019. Phase 2 from 180th St SE to SR 524 will be constructed after Phase 1 is completed.
Economic Alliance of Snohomish County (EASC) is a great
resource for businesses and Snohomish County government as we work together to
help businesses grow and to attract new businesses to our county. Additionally,
EASC has a wealth of helpful information on their website for small businesses.
Please visit the EASC website at: www.economicalliancesc.org

The “Run of the Mill” is a very big event for the Mill
Creek community. This year’s run once again featured many runners and walkers. Another key benefit of the run is the fun and excitement created in our
community by the event itself.
This starts with the selfless acts of volunteerism—the
amount of time, resources and commitment needed to make this annual run happen
is staggering. The volunteer’s intent is to simply give back to the community. Thank you to Columbia Funding
Mortgage, Steve Knox and his army of volunteers, coaches and other sponsors for organizing and making this happen every year!
Congratulations to Verizon for the Grand Opening on one
of the newest locations at 3620 Broadway in Everett. Everett
Councilmember Scott Bader and I were honored to help cut the ribbon.
It’s always good to see business growing in our County!
