Snohomish County Partners with Bothell on Pedestrian Improvements

Bothell
Councilmembers James McNeal, Rosemary McAuliffe, County Councilmember Terry Ryan, Councilmember Tom Agnew, Mayor Andy Rheaume, Councilmember Liam Olsen, Deputy Mayor Davina Duerr and Councilmember Jeanne Zornes

Whether it's Snohomish County, a city, or a private organization, partnerships are crucial to any successful project. At the June 19 City Council meeting, I was honored to present the City of Bothell with $30,000 to help with pedestrian and bike path improvements including sidewalks, curbs and gutters at 19th Ave SE and 232nd.  I'm proud Snohomish County was able to help move the project forward.

Planning Commission Vacancy

There is an opening from District 4 for the Snohomish County Planning Commission.  Planning Commissioners are citizen volunteers (not county employees) and are appointed by the County Council.  The Planning Commission holds public hearings and develops recommendations to the County Council and Executive on planning issues such as zoning code, comprehensive plan amendments and development regulations.  The Commission meets the fourth Tuesday of each month on the County Campus in Everett.  Members should have some knowledge of planning issues.

If interested in applying for this position, please contact my office for an application or more information.

Welcome to our new Commanding Officer, Captain Michael Davis!  Prior to arriving in Everett, Captain Davis was stationed at the U.S. Pacific Command as the Deputy Division Chief for the Space and Integrated Air and Missile Defense Division.  We look forward to working with Captain Davis here at Naval Station Everett.

Global Commercial Space Sector

From rocket development and launch services to satellite and space vehicle manufacturing, a surprising variety of jobs are involved in the space industry here in the central Puget Sound region.

As President of the Puget Sound Regional Council Economic Development Board, it’s exciting to learn more about this industry that is supporting 6,200 jobs throughout our region and state. The central Puget Sound region is already a worldwide leader in aerospace and information technology, and we plan on being a world leader in the space industry as well.

Here are some of early findings:

  • 2,900 people are directly employed in the state’s space industry, including 1,100 at Blue Origin.
  • The space industry in the state supports 6,200 jobs, including direct, indirect, and induced employment.
  • The space industry contributes $1.7 billion in economic activity to the state economy.

The full study by Berk Consulting will be released in July.

Snohomish County is Planning for Light Rail

Light Rail

In anticipation of the arrival of Sound Transit’s light rail service in the mid-2030's, Snohomish County is launching a planning project to prepare an area of unincorporated Snohomish County. In partnership with stakeholders, the county is proactively planning with the surrounding communities to best integrate land use and transit. The county is seeking public input via an online open house.

What: Visit the online open house webpage to:

  • Learn about the project background, purpose and timeline.
  • Give your input on what should be considered during the planning phase.
  • Tell us about the neighborhood and which amenities you care about most.
  • Help identify and provide feedback on potential project benefits and impacts.
  • Find out about public involvement opportunities and how to stay informed.

When: June 22 – July 23, 2018

Memorial Field Dedication

I was honored to attend the dedication of Everett Memorial Field on June 15.  Everett Memorial Stadium is home to several soccer and baseball teams.  The field flooded continuously.  With the new artificial surface, flooding is no longer a problem allowing for much more use of the field.  Contributors to this project included Snohomish County, Everett School District and the Aquasox.  This is another example of partnering on a large project for the greater good of the entire community.

Tour de Terrace – July 27, 28 and 29

Tour de Terrace is a Seafair-sanctioned, summer festival that attracts tens of thousands of visitors to Mountlake Terrace each July.  The first Tour de Terrace, as we know it today, was celebrated in 1994 when two citizens, Jerry and Judi Smith, wanted to commemorate the city's 40th birthday with an event to generate community spirit and pride.

Today the festival features a parade complete with Seafair pirates and clowns, live music over three days, beer garden, carnival, street fair, classic car show, 5K fun run/walk and pancake breakfast.  The Smith family, along with their long-term, dedicated group of volunteers, still operates the festival with police, public works and publicity assistance from the city.

The Tour de Terrace festival is located at the Evergreen Playfield Complex at 22205 56th Avenue W.  The parade route runs along 56th Avenue W beginning at the staging area at 234th Street SW and concludes at the park.  In 2018, Tour de Terrace will take place on July 27, 28 and 29.
