Timber Tour

Earlier this month I was invited to participate in a timber tour in Whatcom County.  We met at the Deming Log Museum and roughly 50 of us went into the mountains to learn more about the timber industry and state trust lands.  Speakers were logging companies, lumber mills and DNR (Department of Natural Resources).  I was impressed with the pride in the work being done as well as the respect each person had for our forests and the sustainable resource it provided for our state. In talking with DNR staff we learned more about the new change to the treatment of state forest revenue. This article outlines this change.  Not all of District 5 school districts benefit from this change, but our smaller rural districts will greatly benefit. Here is a list of the districts and acreage within each district.

Lake Stevens Rotary Scholarships

Last month I was honored to be part of our Lake Stevens Rotary Scholarship night.  We honored some amazing students and for the fifth year in a row I presented my scholarship to a very worthy recipient.  Our graduating students are off to new and exciting adventures next fall.  Congratulations to all our 2018 graduates!

Alaska Reception

Last month Alaska Airlines invited a few people out to hear more about their plans for commercial service at Paine Field airport.  They brought in the CFO (Chief Football Officer) and I was able to meet Russell and get a moment for a picture.  As it says – Everett is ready for Take Off! The terminal is right on schedule and with the FAA doing a new environmental review the hope is flights will start at the end of 2018 to early 2019.

WATV (Wheeled All-Terrain Vehicles)

Monroe City Council passed a new law allowing WATV’s within city limits. I am working with staff to revise our current pilot program from Sultan to various county roads to have a route that connects Monroe and Sultan.  This will be a great service to our outdoor recreation enthusiasts, and provides tourism opportunities for both of these cities.

Annexations of Urban Growth Areas

I have had several meetings with our east county mayors discussing how the county can make it easier for cities to annex their UGA (urban growth areas).  Both council and the executive are committed to help our cities move forward on this process.
