I
was honored to attend a Private Regional Update with Alaska Airlines on May
23.
We
are excited about the upcoming passenger service from Paine Field. This
fall, Alaska will begin serving 8 cities and have 13 daily flights from Paine
Field to these destinations: Portland, San Francisco, San Jose, Los
Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Las Vegas and Phoenix. Commercial service
from Paine Field will save more than 80 minutes commute time for our residents.

The Mill Creek Senior Center had its Grand Opening on
Thursday, May 10. It’s located in the
new Vintage Housing center on 132nd St. in Mill Creek. The idea of locating the new facility in the
affordable housing center was the brainchild of City Manager Rebecca
Polizzotto. She worked with
builder/developer Ryan Patterson who contributed $200,000 of his own money to
the project.
Back when I was on the Mill Creek City Council, we realized
building a standalone facility was simply not financially feasible. I worked with State Senator Steve Hobbs to
secure a $30,000 grant to remodel part of the City Hall North Building for the
seniors. That worked for many years as a
temporary site. Even better, they now
have a new permanent location.
Congratulations to the Northshore Senior Center which
oversees the Mill Creek branch and provides programming as well as to City Manager Rebecca
Polizzotto for her creativity and to the Mill Creek City Council for making the
project a reality!

The
City of Mill Creek has a new Farmer’s Market that will be open Fridays from
noon to 5 pm through August 31. There will be nearly 30 vendors with
more promised as the growing season progresses. Agriculture is an
important business in the Snohomish County economy. Food produced locally tends
to be fresher. I hope everyone will support our local farmers at markets
throughout Snohomish County this season.
Congratulations
to Mill Creek for its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at its Veterans
Monument and parade. Members of the community lined the parade route to pay tribute to
those who have fallen in the defense of our country. Mill Creek is committed to
honoring its veterans and those who have fallen. Thank you for allowing me to
be part of your celebration.

I
was honored to present this ceremonial check at a Brier City Council meeting
for sidewalks and ADA ramps which will enhance citizen safety.
Thank
you to Mayor Bob Colinas and his City Council for all the hard work they do for
their residents.
Come on out on June 30th for The Run of the Mill – a 5k (3.1 mile) race in Mill Creek. It is the longest standing annual event in Mill Creek. Since 2006,
the race has been a fundraising event to benefit those fighting cancer. The
ROTM is a very fun event – not only because the race itself has become a very
respected and competitive 5k, but also because its a community event with booths, prize give-aways, music, cash
awards and great community spirit.
The Run of the Mill raises money for Providence
Hospital’s Linda Baltzell Cancer Patients Assistance Fund which provides for
basic life needs expenses for cancer patients. A secondary focus is providing financial
support for underfunded, non-cut high school track, cross country and swim
programs.

I
support using tourism tax dollars for improvements to the Edmonds
Center for the Arts. It makes economic sense to reinvest in
some of our greatest assets and sources of cultural pride.
These
capital grants will help to ensure the continued success
of these facilities. We are well positioned to support them
while maintaining a healthy budget balance in these funds.
I
also want to commend the Snohomish County Lodging Tax Committee
(LTAC). We have four members Shawn Walker, Rachel
Blake, Debbie Copple and Adrienne Hall. All four of these members
volunteer considerable time, expertise and energy to
get the small fund and large fund grants awarded. I chair the
meetings. Amy Spain, Director of the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau also
serves as an ex-officio member.
More Savings
The County Council continues to look for savings as we
move into a very difficult budget process.
The Council recently cut our own operating expenses by $11,000 by
eliminating unused computer equipment.
That action reduced our service and licensing fees. No savings is too small for action. Fiscal responsibility is one of my core
values.
Children’s Commission Needs Volunteers
Would you like to serve on the Snohomish County Children's Commission?
SSC 2.410 created the Children's Commission, "which
shall serve as advisors on issues of health, safety and social services for
infants, young children and youth in the community." The Commission
advises the Executive and Human Services department staff on matters related
the administration and enhancement of children's programs. The Commission is made up of 25 members, at
least 2 of whom are youth under the age of 18.
Three members shall be appointed from each council district, with the
remaining 10 at-large appointments from anywhere in the county. Commissioners serve 4-year terms, except for
youth commissioners, who serve 1-year terms.
My County Council District has three openings on the
Children’s Commission. For more information

the landscape and the inspirational forces of nature that shape it. Light
refreshments will be served.

Brier Pizza to host fundraiser benefiting Holly House

Brier Pizza, located at 23631 Brier Rd., will host a
fundraiser benefiting local nonprofit Holly House on Tuesday, June 5. Holly House provides
holiday gifts and support to over 2,000 low-income children from within the
Edmonds School District. Click here for more
information. The fundraiser on June
5 will run from 11 am to 9 pm. Brier Pizza will donate 25 percent of all sales
to Holly House. Proceeds from a raffle will also benefit the organization.
Holly House will also be collecting donations of new socks and underwear for
children served by the organization. Special
appearances by Moana, Belle and a minion will take place from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm.
