Supervised Drug Consumption Facilities Ordinance

Council voted to prohibit the siting of supervised drug consumption facilities within unincorporated Snohomish County. I appreciate my fellow Councilmember Nate Nehring bringing this ordinance forward.  Snohomish County has several proven programs already in place to combat the opioid crisis including the imbedded social worker program.  I would like to see our time and resources focused in these areas and others that have proven methods of success in treating addition.  In East County, EvergreenHealth Monroe has several treatment options available.  My office has been working with the hospital to make sure these resources are known to the residents in this area. Below is a brief outline of the services provided.

The Recovery Center is a department of the hospital (EvergreenHealth Monroe) but is located in a stand-alone building directly across the street from the main hospital. The Recovery Center provides a full-range of addiction treatment services, including:

- Medical detoxification unit (8 beds)
- Inpatient/residential treatment unit (24 beds, 21-day program)
- Day treatment / partial-hospitalization program
- Intensive outpatient program (IOP – 3 times per week groups)
- Outpatient/Aftercare (once per week groups)
- Detox & inpatient treatment for pregnant women

The Recovery Center also has an Addiction Medicine Clinic across the street from the treatment center, where 3 providers see patients on an outpatient basis, and provide a range of MAT (medically assisted treatment) services.

The Recovery Center is able to accept most commercial insurance products and private pay arrangements. It is also able to accept Medicaid for pregnant women, and Medicare for our outpatient programs. The Addiction Medicine clinic is able to accept commercial insurance as well as Medicaid and Medicare.

Chronic Nuisance Ordinance

Council also passed the Chronic Nuisance Ordinance in Snohomish County.  This is a critical tool for our code and law enforcement.  I have done several rides with our Snohomish County Drug and Gang Task Force and our Sheriff’s Office and have seen firsthand the problems we have with our chronic nuisance properties.  They are a challenge for law enforcement, land owners and neighbors who have to deal with these properties.  Our hope is that with this ordinance it will allow code and law enforcement to move forward on cleaning up these properties for our county and it residents.

Council Meeting / Town Hall

CM Low

On Monday, April 2nd, the Snohomish County Council held their third evening meeting of 2018. The meeting was held at 6:00 PM at the Brightwater Treatment Plant, which is located within Snohomish County Council District 5. Immediately following this I hosted a Town Hall meeting.  We had over 100 people come out to our meeting and Town Hall.  I am appreciative of all the elected officials who came out and joined me at this meeting.  During this time, Executive Somers and I announced the formation of the Maltby Area Advisory Group (MAAG).  The MAAG will be comprised of community residents and community business owners.  It will be led by the Planning Commission Chairman, Jim Langston, who also resides in the Maltby area.  For more information read the Herald article from April 2nd.  If you are interested in being part of this group please email Kenneth.Klein@co.snohomish.wa.us.  Additional information will be available in the coming weeks.

Flags for Our Fallen – 5K Run May 26th

Flags

Monroe, Washington – Monroe VFW Post 7511 is excited to host the second annual Flags for our Fallen, a family-friendly 5-kilometer walk/run event that takes place 9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2018, at Lake Tye Park in Monroe.

The event includes a welcoming message from Monroe Mayor Geoffrey Thomas, a speech by Monroe VFW Post 7511-member Nick Jacobson, a bagpipe performance by Monroe Police Department Sgt. Brian Johnston, a 5-kilometer run around Lake Tye, concessions and vendor area.

Presentations will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the walk/run starting promptly at 10.

“Whether walking, running, pushing a stroller, or just spending time with us at Lake Tye, this is an event for everyone. Especially families,” said Post 7511 Quartermaster Jaymie Weber. “Instilling a strong sense of patriotism in our youth is such an important part of the VFW mission, and sharing the true meaning of Memorial Day with our young ones is a wonderful way to do that.”

All funds raised during the event will support Post 7511 as it seeks to grow its membership base, help veterans and bolster its level of community outreach. The VFW is a national organization dedicated to helping veterans in need, serving communities and furthering patriotism, particularly among the youth.

Vendor and business sponsorship opportunities are available, with vendor booth space offered for a suggested donation of $50. A $500 business sponsorship assures business logo inclusion on printed materials and promotional items supporting the event. To be included in event advertising, sponsorships must be finalized no later than May 4, 2018.

Veteran-owned businesses and organizations are invited to participate in the event at no cost.
