Happy Holidays!
As we wrap up 2017, I'd like to take this time to say thank you for choosing me to be your representative for District 2. It's been my honor this past year to serve as Chair of the Council.
What makes Snohomish County so great is your commitment to help each other. This holiday season please consider shopping locally and remember those families that are in need.
Wishing you all the best for the Holiday Season and a joyous New Year!
Each year before Snohomish County state legislatures convene for the start of their session, the County Council, along with the Executive, elected officials and department heads host a meeting highlighting Snohomish County's top legislative priorities. This year a few of the highlights included additional behavioral health treatment facilities, addressing the opioid epidemic, supporting a pilot program for a diversion center, transportation concerns, addressing uncertainties caused by the Supreme Court's Hirst decision and improving the County's fiscal health. We appreciate the hard work our state legislators put in and together we'll tackle the issues facing Snohomish County.
Snohomish County Council entered into an interlocal agreement with the Everett School District to help fund improvements to the Everett Memorial Stadium Baseball Field. Snohomish County will fund $300k of this project in the agreement with Everett School District, which will fund approximately $1.8 million. The Everett Aquasox will also contribute $300k for the project. It was exciting for me to hand over the check this last Tuesday, December 5th.
Memorial Stadium is a crucial facility for both Everett School District and a regional attraction as the home field of the Aquasox. This is a great example that synergy and creating public private partnerships helps us achieve our mutual goals.
Everett Memorial Stadium opened in 1984 and was built on land donated by the Elks in memorial to those who gave their lives in World War II. The baseball field is used by the school district for their athletic programs, and is the home field for the Everett Aquasox. The most recent major improvements to this facility were in 1998 and funded by the hotel/motel tax.
Recent seasons have been plagued by bad weather, with rain events making the field unusable for much of the school district’s planned games. The project will remove the existing infield, outfield and warning track to replace the drainage system with a fast drain design. It will also replace the existing natural grass surfaces with synthetic surfaces.
If weather cooperates, they expect to be playing on the improved field as early as March.
Capital Partnership Project
Congratulations to Forest View Elementary School PTA, recipient of a Small Capital Project Partnership Grant. In May they were awarded $8,542 for a special needs playground. The grant helped pay for over half of stage 2 and the generous supporters of the Forest View PTA covered all of stage 1 and the remainder of stage 2.
The ribbon cutting for the new playground will be on December 12th. Partnership grants are awarded to local non-profits that partner with a public entity to fund projects that benefit the community. Forest View Elementary PTA partnered with Everett Public Schools to create an inclusive playground for all children to enjoy.
“It
has been a two-year process but a seven-year dream to have this playground
installed,” shared special services nurse liaison, Laura Peterson, RN, BSN.

Build a Gingerbread House! December 16, 2017 12:30PM - 3PM
Bring your kids and their friends and make a festive gingerbread house! All supplies are provided, and the entire event is free. This is one way Jericho Bridge Church gives back to the community. Build a personal gingerbread house, constructed using graham crackers wrapped around milk cartons, and “glued” with frosting. YUM! Then, decorate with over 20 different fun and colorful candies.
Come with your imagination, and leave with your gingerbread house and some wonderful memories. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
