County Fireworks Ban?
I have received a number of calls requesting a
ban on fireworks in the unincorporated areas around Mill Creek. Last
year, I brought this issue to a committee meeting for council discussion and
consideration. Based on the information received along the way, I
proposed an advisory measure so that voters throughout the County could share
their opinions. Unfortunately, a majority of the county council did not
want to put an advisory measure on the ballot.
The measure would have been
advisory only. The county council would have been required by law to
allow all voters countywide to participate even though the measure would only
apply to unincorporated areas. If the majority of the public wanted a ban
on fireworks in their areas, we could have written an ordinance tailored just
for those specific areas.
The measure failed by a vote of 2
to 3. I voted in favor of the measure. Councilmember Stephanie
Wright also supported it. I will continue to pursue an advisory vote in
the next year.
Bothell Conservations
Futures Grant
I
was honored to present a $1,000,000 ceremonial check to the Bothell City
Council and community members Tuesday, July 18. This award helps save the
Shelton View Forest in Bothell.
The
Shelton View Forest is a truly unique space in rapidly developing Bothell.
The grant from the Snohomish County Conservation Futures Program will help
Bothell pay for a 17 acre parcel of private, forested land. Once
acquired, the plan is for the forest to be preserved and become a passive park.
Thank
you to the Snohomish County Conservation Futures Board, my colleagues on the
County Council, Bothell City Council members, and residents for working
together!
Have you ever attended a National Night Out event in your
community? These events are great fun and free! The purpose is to raise
community policing awareness and talk about local police programs. I was fortunate enough to
attend three events last year.
Once again, the Sheriff’s Office will be at Willis Tucker
Community Park from 5 – 8 pm. The
Sheriff’s Office helicopter, fire trucks, and other emergency response vehicles
will be onsite for kids to play in. There will be free food, live music, the
splash pad and much more! Over 1,500
residents participated in last year’s event.
We gave out over 1,100 hotdogs, 800 ears of corn, and over 600 snocones!
The Sheriff’s Office will also be holding events in
Darrington, Gold Bar, Granite Falls, Snohomish, Stanwood and Sultan. If your neighborhood is hosting a National
Night Out event and you would like to request a visit by a Sheriff’s Office
deputy, you can register your event online.
Several neighborhoods are already signed up!
For more information visit:
https://snohomishcountywa.gov/310/National-Night-Out.
I also attended the
Mountlake Terrace Night Out last year. Again, there were over 1,500 people
meeting with their local police department, learning more about personal
security, playing games and having fun.
Mountlake Terrace will hold its 2017 National Night Out at the Evergreen Playfield, 22205 56th Ave West starting at 6 pm.
In 2016 Brier had a
great turnout. Mayor Bob Colinas said they gave out over 900 hot dogs.
Brier, will hold its 2017
National Night Out at Brier Park at 6 pm.
Mill Creek will hold
its 2017 National Night out at Buffalo Park, 13401 44th Ave SE from
5:30 – 8:30 pm.
I will be attending
several National Night Out events and hope to see you there!
Puget Sound Energy warns of a recent spike in a phone scam
that targets residents and small businesses. Since the start of July, PSE
has received nearly 200 reports of scammers trying to get money from
customers, with six of those customers paying the thieves’ demands.
Scammers use sophisticated phone technology to alter Caller ID systems so
it appears a call is coming from PSE. The scammer warns that PSE will
disconnect the customer’s energy service within an hour if the customer fails
to make a payment through a prepaid money card or transfer. The long-running
scam targets utility consumers across the country.
PSE advises customers to stay informed to protect themselves
from fraud. Scammers can be threatening and clever in using new, deceptive
tactics.
WHAT TO DO AND WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE SCAMS:
-
PSE never asks or requires customers
who have delinquent accounts to purchase a prepaid debit card to avoid
disconnection.
-
PSE customers receive several
communications related to bill payment before any disruption in service.
-
When it comes to bill payment calls,
PSE’s vendors do not call after noon on Saturdays and do not make any
calls on Sundays; any calls during those periods are definite red flags.
-
Customers with concerns about a call
to pay their bill should hang up and contact PSE directly at 1-888-225-5773.
-
PSE urges customers to report
suspicious, fraudulent calls and emails to the Washington
Attorney General’s Office and the Federal
Trade Commission.
The
Boeing Employees Community fund has approved a $500,000 grant for Cocoon
House toward the construction of a new $12M facility that will replace two
older buildings the agency has since outgrown. The new building, located in
downtown Everett, will add more units of housing to address the issue of
homelessness and focus on programming that supports vulnerable youth. Having a
safe, warm place to stay is the first step. Once a youth enters the housing
program, they are then offered an array of services to help them stabilize and
gain skills for independence.
Some of the offerings at the new facility will
include:
- 20 beds dedicated to housing homeless adults ages 18-24 (new
demographic for Cocoon House)
- 20 beds dedicated to housing homeless youth ages 15-17
- Health services related to medical and dental referrals (not
currently offered at existing facilities)
- Intensive, personalized, one-on-one case management and advocacy
- Life skills instruction, with an emphasis on helping youth
increase self-sufficiency
- Individual and family mental health counseling
- Onsite drug and alcohol prevention and treatment
Annually,
Cocoon House serves 2,500 youth through their Outreach, Housing and Prevention
programs. Construction commences December 2017, with a grand opening in
February 2019.
Thank
you to our Boeing employees for their continuing commitment to our community!
