County successfully lobbies legislature for substance abuse funding

The opioid epidemic continues to ravage lives in our County. To help us fight back, Snohomish County is receiving a grant for $200,000 for Medication Assisted Treatment in our County Jail. We also pushed hard for a program to fund 10 nurse care managers. Unfortunately, those positions will be allocated statewide to geographic areas needing assistance the most. We will definitely be applying to receive our fair share.

We also requested $192,000 to purchase Naloxone kits to help revive overdose victims. No funding was included in the legislative budget for this project. Thank you to our Snohomish County Senators that offered the only amendment in the operating budget that would have included this funding. Although their amendment failed, they laid the groundwork for another request in the supplemental budget next session.

These are small steps in a very large battle. I am committed to helping substance abuse victims get the help they need and ensuring law enforcement has the tools it needs to win its part of this war.

Community Transit Proceeding on 128th Street Widening Project

Construction officially gets underway this week on a project to add new right-hand lanes approaching a busy I-5 overpass in south Everett. To help speed buses along the Swift Green Line, new right-hand lanes are being created on 128th Street approaching I-5 in south Everett. There will be one new lane on each side of the freeway.

Heading west, the new right lane will be for buses and all traffic turning right onto northbound I-5. When a bus is present, the traffic signal gives the right-lane a green light a few seconds before the through lanes to allow the bus to get across the overpass.

Heading east, the new lane will be for all traffic turning right onto southbound I-5. The second lane in will be a bus-only lane to help get buses across the overpass.

Currently, it can take buses anywhere from 3 to 17 minutes to cross this busy overpass. This project will help buses stay on schedule, and will also benefit all traffic traveling across the overpass or entering I-5 from 128th Street.

This 128th Street project could take two summer construction seasons to complete, or it may be done by the end of this year. The final timeline depends on how much of the road work can be completed before October.

Snohomish County fastest growing large county in 2016

Updated U.S. Census estimates show that Snohomish County was the fastest growing large county in Washington in 2016. From July 1, 2015 to July 1, 2016, the County grew by 2.27%, adding 17,455 residents. In total growth, only King and Pierce counties added more residents. King County was fourth in the nation in total growth, adding 35,714 residents.

The July 1, 2016 population estimate for Snohomish County was 787,620.

Of the 17,455 new residents to Snohomish County in 2016:

4,187 from natural increase (births minus deaths)
12,901 from migration
2,425 from other nations
10,476 from other counties and states

Since the last census in 2010, Snohomish County has added 74,312 people, second only to King County, which added 218,689 residents over the same period. Since 2010, Snohomish County was second only to King County amongst large county percentage growth at 10.42%.

Similar to the United States as a whole, the data revealed that Snohomish County's population is getting older. Persons 65 years and over grew from 10.3% of the population in 2010 to 12.8% in 2016. Persons under 18 years decreased from 24.4% of the population in 2010, to 22.8% in 2016.

Congratulations to the City of Mountlake Terrace and Girl Scout Troop 43752 on their $5,000 grant from the Snohomish County Small Capital Partnership Project! The funds will go toward extending and improving the trail around Matt Hirvella Bicentennial Park. According to the terms of the grant, the project must be completed by December 31, 2017.

Mill Creek Business Association monthly luncheon

Thank you to the Mill Creek Business Association for their invitation to speak at their monthly July luncheon. It was an opportunity to update the membership on what Snohomish County is doing to attract more businesses and family wage jobs to our area. These meetings are also a great opportunity for me to hear from our constituents and local business leaders about their needs and what we at the County can do better.

The MCBA is also hosting the annual Mill Creek Festival this weekend. This is a FREE, fun, Family Friendly local community event that draws thousands of people every year to Mill Creek. Please see more information in the “District Events” section below!

Fernwood Elementary School to receive new soccer goals

Thank you to the members of the Fernwood Elementary School PTSA for their warm welcome on campus Friday, June 23rd! Fernwood was another successful applicant for a grant as part of the Snohomish County Small Capital Partnership Project. The PTSA in partnership with the Northshore School District received $4,000 to purchase new playfield soccer goals. I am always looking for ways to help young people in our district.

31st Annual Run of the Mill is a huge success

Thank you to Steve Knox and Columbia Funding Mortgage for again sponsoring the 2017 Run of the Mill. During the 31 years of this event, over $300,000 has been donated to the Linda Baltzell Cancer Patient Assistance Fund and Providence Everett Hospital and local high school track & cross country and swim teams. Each year, many runners (and walkers) from all over the state converge on Mill Creek to participate in this popular event.

Public Works Open House

Public Works Open House

Snohomish County Public Works hosted another public meeting on June 27 at the North Creek Presbyterian Church in Mill Creek. Public Works Staff answered questions regarding road projects including Seattle Hill Road, 35th Ave – Phases 1 and 2, 43rd Avenue and 196th St/Grannis Road. I attended the event. It was great to meet and listen to our residents. Thank you to all who attended the meeting!

Brier Boy Scouts receive grant

Brier Boy Scouts receive check

Brier Boy Scout Troop #0060 and the City of Brier have been awarded a $3,200 grant as part of the Snohomish County Small Capital Partnership Project. They will use the money for the Locust Creek Park Trail Renovation. This is a terrific community service project. Congratulations to the Troop and their families!

Sundquist Family Movies in the Park

It’s time for the 2017 Sundquist Family Movies in the Park. These movies will run for six consecutive Thursdays beginning July 13 through August 17. Movies begin at dusk and are free to the public. The movies are shown at Willis Tucker Park Amphitheater right here in our district, 6705 Puget Park Drive, in the Gold Creek area.

Open seating begins at 7:30 p.m. Movie start times listed below are approximate depending on the daylight. All movies are rated PG, are appropriate and fun for the entire family. Admission is free but donations are gladly accepted to benefit the Snohomish County Parks Dept. Seating is on the grass so bring low back lawn chairs and blankets for comfort.

Make Some Noise with Pianos on Main

The City of Mill Creek’s newest art installation, Pianos on Main, invites people to play their hearts out on three pianos while visiting Mill Creek Town Center. The pianos were donated by residents of Mill Creek and were refurbished with the help of Henry M. Jackson High School students. The pianos will be installed on Saturday, July 8, and will remain on the street through the final Art Walk on Thursday, Aug. 10.

People are invited to make music and enjoy the artistic talents of others. The piano locations include:

Mill Creek Second Thursday Art Walk

The Mill Creek Town Center will be hosting an Art Walk on July 13 from 5-8pm. This is a free event and is fun for the whole family. Walk the Town Center and enjoy art from local artists. Look for the information booth by Boston’s to get your map for the event.

Mill Creek Summer Children’s Concerts Kick Off July 19

The Friends of the Mill Creek Library are co-sponsoring with the City of Mill Creek and other local sponsors to present four children’s summer concerts over four weeks at Library Park on Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. These performances feature music, fun and laughs for children of all ages. Bring a picnic, a blanket and join the entertainment.

Community Invited to Participate in National Night Out on Aug. 1

The community is invited to join the City of Mill Creek first responders for National Night Out on Aug. 1. Festivities will take place at Buffalo Park, located at 13401 44th Ave. SE between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Presented by a small group of dedicated volunteers, this festival was created in 1993 to generate community spirit and pride.
