Heritage Program
The
Community Heritage Program provides up to $10,000 in financial grant resources
to assist the collection, preservation and interpretation of Snohomish County’s
heritage. This program is funded with a
portion of document recording fees collected by the County Auditor. All of these funds allocated are for projects
that “promote historical preservation or historical programs, which may include
preservation of historical documents”.
We had two outstanding projects awarded grants in the 5th
district. The Monroe Historical Society received $7,500.00 for newspaper
digital archiving and the Sky Valley Arts Council received $10,000.00 for
plumbing in the Startup Event Center.
Congratulations to these groups that are working so hard to preserve the
heritage of our County. I was able to be
part of the Startup Gym painting project and I presented this check to them at
that time. It was a great day!
Small Capital
Projects Partnership
The
Small Capital Projects Partnership (SCPP) provides supporting funds for small
capital projects in Snohomish County.
Funding is provided by the Real Estate Excise Tax 2 (REET 2) Fund.
Applicants must partner with a public entity on whose land the field or
facility is located. The goal of the program is to award grants across
Snohomish County. The Sultan School
District along with the Sultan Elementary PTO received $5,000.00 for the Sultan
Elementary baseball field. Through
school fundraisers they raised additional funds to complete the
baseball field. I presented a check to
the Sultan Elementary this week, it was wonderful to see the students so
excited.
On May 22nd our Council and the County Executive
approved joint resolution 17-020 honoring Memorial Day. It was especially humbling for me after I had
the pleasure of touring the Naval Destroyer USS Sampson that same
afternoon. I am so thankful for the men
and women of our county who choose to serve and protect our nation. These hard working individuals are a vital
part of our community, and I am grateful that they call Snohomish
County home.
On Monday June 5th, 2017, the
Snohomish County Council will hold their fourth evening meeting of 2017. The
meeting will be held 6:00 PM at the Jefferson Elementary School cafeteria (2500
Cadet Way, Everett, WA 98208) which is located within Snohomish County Council
District 5. In November of 2016, Snohomish County citizens voted to pass
Proposition 5 which requires the County Council to hold an evening meeting
in each County Council district at least once each calendar year.
This
is our first council meeting in unincorporated Snohomish County and I am happy
it is in the Silver Lake Area. If this
area were a city, it would be the second largest city in my district, and I
want the people there to know that I represent them as well. It is also personally fulfilling given we are
having the meeting at Jefferson Elementary, where 40 years ago I attended
Kindergarten and First Grade.
Monroe and Sultan are looking for community feedback as
they re-imagine their community connections to public access sites and the
proposed water trail along the Skykomish River.
The open house will be June 3rd from 6pm to 8pm at Mountain
View Christian Church in Sultan. The
open house will feature sketches and recommendations generated by teams of
local citizens, municipal staff, landscape architects, local leaders and area
habitat experts during a design workshop hosted by these two river towns.
I will be meeting with the
design teams on June 2nd and I will also be at the open house on
June 3rd to hear the communities’ feedback. The Sky Valley
area is rich with numerous recreational opportunities. We have a duty to
preserve these waterways as well as making them available for our residents to
enjoy.
There
are several county roads in the 5th District scheduled for chip seal
work this summer – I have included a link to show where this work is scheduled
to be completed. https://snohomishcountywa.gov/2974/Chip-Seal-Program
Starting this month we will begin
our focus on the 2018 budget.
I have spent time with staff discussing our previous years’ budgets and will be
looking closely at how we can be certain we are appropriating our budget in a fiscally
responsible way as well as making sure the needs of our residents are being
met. My office will keep you up-to-date on our progress.
