Chief Williams brings nearly 35 years of law enforcement experience to the role. He began his career with the King County Sheriff’s Office in June 1991 following service in the U.S. Navy as an engineer aboard the nuclear submarine USS Alaska.
Over the course of his career, Chief Williams has served in the cities of Federal Way, Burien, Covington, Maple Valley, Newcastle, and SeaTac in a variety of patrol, investigative, and command roles. He has commanded the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division, Special Operations units (including SWAT, Marine, Aviation, and the Advanced Training Unit), the Internal Investigations Unit, and Metro Transit Police.
Chief Williams most recently served as Chief of Police for Sound Transit Police before returning to the King County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division. He holds an A.A.S. in Criminal Justice from Highline College, attended the University of Utah, and is a 2016 graduate of the Northwestern University School for Police Staff and Command.
City Manager Young noted that the selection process was highly competitive, with both finalists demonstrating exceptional professionalism and commitment to public safety.
“Marcus brings several years of prior experience serving as a Chief of Police, along with a depth of strategic leadership that was evident throughout the process. He has shared a clear and compelling vision for the role — one that reflects both the immediate needs of the organization and a forward-looking approach to strengthening public safety and community trust in SeaTac,” said City Manager Jonathan Young. “His connection to regional partners, including the Sound Transit leadership team, will be an asset as we continue to advance our public safety priorities.”
Young also expressed gratitude to finalist Captain Mike Smith, who served as Acting Chief of Police during the transition period.
“Mike has led with professionalism and steadiness, and his commitment to the organization and community has been evident throughout this transition,” said Young.
About the Search Process
The search for a new Chief of Police was initiated following the resignation of Chief Troy Smithmeyer in January, who departed to accept a position with King County. The recruitment was conducted in partnership with the King County Sheriff’s Office and included an open application period, candidate screening, structured panel interviews at SeaTac City Hall on April 3, and a public Meet & Greet on April 14, 2026. The City Manager’s selection considered verbal and written input from City staff, community members, and interview panelists.
