A Data-Driven Approach to Measuring Agricultural Sustainability in Large Landscapes
A recent study by the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) uses large, standardized data to assess the effects of conservation strategies across large rangeland areas. USDA ARS scientists used spatial and statistical models to understand the impact of coordinated agricultural management and conservation activities over the last 25 years by the Malpai Borderlands Group. More information can be found in the USDA-ARS press release.
Advancing Conservation on Rented Land
More than 350 million acres, or 40% of the farmland in the United States, is rented or leased. Often this land is owned by a Non-Operating Landowner (NOL). To date there has not been a lot of research into conservation adoption and resource management goals within NOLs. “Advancing Understanding of Conservation Practices on Rented Land” by American Farmland Trust was recently published in the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation. The study sheds light onto this ownership demographic and provides ideas about how to advance farmland preservation and natural resource conservation outcomes. Read the press release for more information.
