To kick off the Fall season, the San Juan County Health & Community Services Food Safety Program is excited to share some food safety resources with our newsletter subscribers. Food Establishments work hard to feed San Juan County safely year-round and should be recognized for their dedication to public health. This month, we hope to raise food safety awareness by reviewing some rules and risks.
Approved Sources and Why Permits Matter
When you buy from licensed food businesses, you know the food has been prepared in an approved kitchen, by trained staff, and inspected for safety.
How to spot safe food:
- Permits on display at restaurants, food trucks, or stands.
- Labels showing who made it and where it came from.
- Farmers market vendors showing a permit if they sell prepared foods.
Unapproved sellers may be unaware of safe cooking temperatures, proper storage, or cleanliness.

Report Unsafe or Unlicensed Food
If you see food being sold in unsafe conditions, reporting it can protect your family and neighbors.
When to report:
- Food sold without a permit (e.g., at events, online, in person).
- Food prepared in unsafe or dirty conditions.
- People getting sick after eating somewhere.
