Puget Sound Clean Truck Collaborative, Terminal 106 renovations, and Terminal 5 Quarterly Update top Tuesday’s meeting

At their Tuesday, November 1 meeting, The Northwest Seaport Alliance Managing Members will consider authorizing funds for the work creating the Puget Sound Zero-Emission Truck Collaborative. The NWSA will be accepting a grant from the Washington Dept. of Transportation in the amount of $400,000.

Additionally, Managing Members will take dual action on authorizing additional funds to complete the Terminal 106 U.S. Customers and Border Facility Renovation Project. Initial funds were authorized for the renovation in August of 2021 and additional requirements alongside elevated material costs require increased funding authorization.

Managing Members will also receive a quarterly update on the Terminal 5 Modernization Project.

NWSA presents their 2021 North Star Awards

The Northwest Seaport Alliance announced its 2021 North Star Award winners at their Customer Reception held earlier this month. The NWSA recognized Wallenius Wilhelmsen Industrial Tacoma with the Cargo Anchor Award and Campbell’s Trucking with the Environmental Stewardship Award. Read the full release here and see below for more about our award winners.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen Industrial Tacoma Wins Cargo Anchor Award

Wallenius Wilhelmson Industrial Tacoma

The Cargo Anchor Award is presented to an organization whose activities have grown cargo volumes in the NWSA gateway, spurring economic growth in the region. Wallenius Wilhelmsen Industrial Tacoma (WWIT) is a full-service Equipment Processing center located in Tacoma that handles a variety of heavy construction, logging and agricultural equipment.  WWIT has seen machine throughput increase 25% from 2019-2021 and successfully attracted high and heavy (H&H) imports and exports to the NWSA gateway. In 2021, Wallenius Wilhelmsen group vessels called Tacoma 65 times and carried nearly 50% more H&H cargo than 2020.

Campbell's Trucking Wins Environmental Stewardship Award

Campbell's Trucking

The Environmental Stewardship Award recognizes businesses that support the continued health of the environment while promoting trade and economic development. Campbell’s Trucking is a woman-owned trucking company that was selected for their reduction in trucking emissions by running their entire fleet of trucks on renewable liquid natural gas (RLNG).

Campbell’s Trucking has privately funded their fleet conversion of diesel to RLNG, doubling the number of LNG-powered trucks in the past year. The 100% renewable RLNG fleet has allowed Campbell’s Trucking to reduce their carbon footprint by approximately 85%. Owners Shannon and Johnnie Campbell aim to provide their Pacific Northwest customers with a carbon footprint conscious drayage option with the ultimate goal of creating a drayage community with zero emissions.

September TEU volumes down 7.3%

Reduced vessel calls continue to negatively impact NWSA import and export volumes, driven in large by congestion at other ports. In addition, many major retailers built up inventories earlier in the year—contributing to weaker than normal peak-season volumes. The strong dollar is creating headwinds for many export agricultural commodities, making them less cost competitive in the global market.

Total container volume for the month decreased 15.5% to 285,315 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with September full imports and exports declining 18.9% and 21%, respectively, year-over-year. Year-to-date volumes declined 7.3% to 2,633,054 TEUs, with full imports and exports declining 11.4% and 21.7%, respectively.  Read More

Ray-Mont Logistics leases Terminal 10 in Seattle to support agricultural exports

Ray-Mont Logistics

Terminal 10 is a 13.19-acre site on the west side of Harbor Island in Seattle, of which 8.1 acres will be utilized as a containerized transloading facility focused on agricultural products.

The largest containerized transloading terminal operator in Canada, Ray-Mont Logistics is one of the largest freight forwarders of export marine containers in Canada. Ray-Mont’s business supports the growth of exports of agricultural product, resins, forest products, and other emerging commodities.

This new lease increases Ray-Mont's footprint in the North Harbor, which includes an adjacent project with King County. These two adjacent properties will allow Ray-Mont to significantly expand the harbor’s trans-loading capabilities while utilizing the on-dock rail asset that serves both projects. Read More
