At their March 15 meeting, The Northwest Seaport Alliance Managing Members will take action on a second amendment to the Terminal 5 lease with SSA Terminals. The proposed amendment changes the configuration of the Phase One premises and does not have a financial impact on the NWSA.
Additionally, Managing Members will consider authorizing a funding increase for substation construction at Terminal 30. An increase of $1,250,000 is requested to cover general cost increases due to volatility in construction costs and longer lead times. Finally, Commissioners will be briefed on current gateway operations and the movement of cargo through Seattle and Tacoma harbors.

The NWSA welcomed its first zero-emission cargo handling equipment to the South Intermodal Yard (SIM) in Tacoma. The SIM Electric Truck Project represents a $2.2 million investment for equipment purchase and infrastructure installation supported by funding from Tacoma Power, Rail Management Services and DERA grant funds. The partnership is resulting in a total of six electric cargo trucks in 2022. Currently, three all-electric yard trucks are moving cargo in Tacoma with three more scheduled to arrive later this year.

NWSA January volumes declined 5.8% to 272,281 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), with full imports declining 0.9% and full exports declining 36% year-over-year. Overall volumes in the gateway have been impacted by vessel call omissions, while full exports continue to be affected by a shortage of equipment and vessel capacity due to vessel voids.
With spring deployment changes, the NWSA will likely see the return of services that were temporarily suspended or called less frequently due to congestion. Vessel calls on the Ocean Alliance’s Columbus PNW service and THE Alliance’s PN3 and AL5 services are expected to increase in the coming months.

 Breakbulk cargo volumes – such as machinery and construction equipment –continues to increase. 2021 marked a record-breaking year while February 2022 became the highest breakbulk month on NWSA record. Take a look at the vessel Billesborg, that carried 159 breakbulk cargo pieces that were unloaded in the Tacoma harbor.

This annual award program recognizes shippers and supply chain partners doing business in the Seattle-Tacoma gateway for impactful initiatives that contribute to the economic and environmental well-being of our gateway and the region. Companies can compete in two categories: Cargo Anchor Award and the Environmental Stewardship Award. Winners are selected based on activities that took place from January-December 2021.
