Redmond Police Warn Community About Roofing and Construction Scam

REDMOND, WA - Redmond Police Department detectives are urging community members to be vigilant after a Redmond resident was scammed out of nearly $300,000 in a fraudulent roofing and construction scheme.

On Dec. 30, 2025, a homeowner in the Education Hill neighborhood reported being approached by two adult white males with Irish accents who were soliciting roofing services door-to-door. They claimed to work for a legitimate local roofing or contracting business, and roofing work was completed without any inspection or verification of quality. The men scammed the victim into paying $298,000 for a new roof.

Detectives are currently investigating multiple cases involving similar tactics.

Victims report that the suspects initially offer roofing services at what appears to be a reasonable price. After gaining agreement, a work crew arrives and begins work. During the project, the suspects claim to discover additional serious issues requiring immediate repair. Victims are then pressured into paying large sums of money for what investigators believe are unnecessary or fraudulent repairs.

Detectives urge residents to be wary of anyone soliciting them for roofing, construction, or masonry work. They recommend the following tips to avoid being scammed:

  • Obtain at least three estimates from different companies.
  • Ensure the contractor obtains the correct permits for the work.
  • Always require a written contract before any work begins.
  • Verify contractors through the Better Business Bureau.
  • Check with the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries to confirm the contractor has a valid Unified Business Identifier (UBI) number.
  • Request photos of previous work and review online ratings.
  • Do not allow pressure to force quick financial decisions.
  • Do not pay more than one-third of the agreed price upfront and withhold final payment until the work is fully completed.
  • Do not pay in full without an official inspection after work is completed.
  • Call 911 if someone attempts to access your roof without permission.
  • If a contractor threatens damage to a home unless payment is made, call 911 immediately.

Anyone with relevant video or information, or who believes they may have been a victim of this or a similar scam, is encouraged to call 911 or the non-emergency line at 425-556-2500.
