Redmond Accelerates Climate Action and Resilience with 2025 Environmental Sustainability Action Plan

REDMOND, WA – At last night’s business meeting, the Redmond City Council adopted the updated 2025 Environmental Sustainability Action Plan (ESAP), a five-year plan to accelerate climate action and advance key sustainability targets. With the adoption of the updated ESAP, the City takes another meaningful step toward the future envisioned through Redmond 2050 of a healthier, resilient, low-carbon city built for everyone.

“Redmond’s sustainability transition is thriving, with expanded transportation choices, more transit-accessible housing, and innovative clean energy projects already shaping our city,” said Mayor Angela Birney. “This updated plan keeps Redmond on track to build on this momentum and meet our climate goals.”

The 2025 ESAP focuses on high-impact strategies and actions that reduce emissions and enhance community and environmental resilience to climate change. The plan highlights what it refers to as its Five Big Moves:

  1. Make Existing Buildings Better
  2. Build Resilient and Efficient Buildings
  3. Provide Accessible and Sustainable Transportation
  4. Achieve Zero Waste of Resources
  5. Foster a Resilient Community and Environment

The 2025 ESAP was shaped by input from community-based organizations, local tribes, residents, businesses, and other stakeholders, reflecting the community’s diverse needs and priorities. The new plan is an update to the 2020 Environmental Sustainability Action Plan and continues the City’s commitment to lead by example in its own operations, as established through Redmond City Council’s 2020 Climate Emergency Declaration.
