Learn About a City Council Vacancy

Following the resignation of Councilmember Osman Salahuddin – who has stepped away to focus on serving in the Washington State House of Representatives – City Council Position #1 is now vacant. The seat will be filled by an external candidate voted on by current Councilmembers, and that candidate will serve the remainder of Salahuddin’s elected term, which runs through 2027.

Residents interested in applying for the vacancy should stay tuned for more information. The City will formally announce the official timeline and process for filling the role later this month.

Be Aware of Avondale Way Lane Closures

Be Aware of Avondale Way Lane Closures

Crews will begin work to replace the sidewalk along both sides of Avondale Way from the intersection of Avondale Way, 170th Ave NE, and NE 79th St, to where Bear Creek Trail meets Avondale Way. Work will begin the week of Nov. 10 and take place between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and will last until spring. This project will replace approximately 1,600 feet of failing sidewalk with new, ADA-accessible sidewalks and curb ramps. Expect intermittent lane closures during construction. Always be alert, drive slowly near work zones, and follow all instructions from flaggers and signage.

Learn About the 2026 Zoning Code Amendment Series

Explore the 2026 Zoning Code Amendment Series

This fall, staff are seeking feedback on three sets of zoning code amendments: business code improvements, conformance with new state legislation, and updates for fences and retaining walls. City staff regularly propose updates to development regulations to ensure consistency with state law, address stakeholder interests and concerns, and maintain regular code maintenance.

The business code improvement package includes proposals to:

  • Ensure commercial floor area is provided in mixed-use developments when required by code.
  • Ensure people know how to access businesses during construction through the use of signage.
  • Simplify and clarify opportunities for food truck and pop-up retail courts and for publicly accessible enhanced amenity spaces.
  • Improve definitions of allowed business uses.

The legislative conformance package addresses new state legislation concerning subdivisions, child-care zoning, parking, and building conversions. It also includes several minor corrections and clarifications.

The fence updates are intended to synchronize and clarify fence requirements, as well as evaluate the purpose and intent of regulating fence and retaining wall locations, dimensions, permit requirements, and design.
