Check Out How Many Crows Are Roosting in Redmond

Have you noticed more crows in Redmond lately? It’s because they’ve been coming here from UW Bothell over the last few years, according to UW Bothell faculty member Dr. Douglas Wacker. Why crows spontaneously change roosts is not well understood, but that seems to be exactly what is happening. Each year in mid-December, local Audubon Society Chapters count all birds by species, and Pilchuck’s Audubon counted over 9,800 crows flying south right past the well-known UW Bothell roost towards a newer roost in Redmond. Interesting fact: A crow roost is different than a nest. Crows make nests to hold eggs and raise nestlings. Crows sleep on a roost site, without nests, during the non-breeding season.

New Card Service Fees Begin on January 2

New Card Service Fees Begin on January 2

The City of Redmond will start charging service fees of 2.99% for payments made with credit and debit cards in the Redmond ePermitting System (REPS), both online and in-person, as well as other over-the-counter payments made at City Hall beginning Jan. 2, 2025. Previously, the City paid these fees for the customer at the City’s expense. The cost has increased significantly in recent years but the City does not want to remove the popular payment option. The fee is being implemented to cover the cost for customers who would like to continue to use this payment option. Credit and debit card convenience fees took effect for utility billing in October and for Parks and Recreation registrations in December. Customers who wish to avoid the fee may pay with a check or cash by mail or in person.
