Redmond Mayor Issues Proclamation of Local Emergency

REDMOND, WA - Mayor Angela Birney signed a proclamation of local emergency for Redmond today, Nov. 20, due to the damaging winds that caused power outages and road closures. City of Redmond emergency operations are in effect and staff from all city departments are working to ensure the safety of the community. The emergency declaration allows the City to respond more quickly to this situation with powers outlined in RCW 38.52.070.

Thousands of residents are still without power and several roads remain closed as a result of downed trees and powerlines. Puget Sound Energy (PSE), is working to restore power and has prioritized transmission lines and substations powering critical infrastructure, including hospitals, and supporting public safety. Redmond crews planned for 24-hour operations to clear debris from roads, ensure that pump stations would run on generator power, and respond to individual emergencies. Starting Tuesday, crews worked overnight, keeping critical city services functioning and opening several roads by daylight. Public Works, Parks, and emergency responders continue to work to keep our community safe. Several city facilities are closed due to lack of power or storm damage and others have opened as warming centers for residents without power at home.

OPEN WARMING CENTERS:

  • City Hall - open until 5:00 p.m. 15670 NE 85th St, Redmond, WA 98052
  • Redmond Senior & Community Center - open until 9:00 p.m. 8703 160th Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98052
  • Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village - open until 8:00 p.m. 6505 176th Ave NE, Redmond, WA 98052

These facilities are available for warming and device charging (laptop-size or smaller). Please bring charging cables and refillable water bottles.

 CLOSED CITY PARKS FACILITIES:

  • Watershed Reserve
  • Farrel McWhirter Park
  • Redmond Pool
  • Hartman Park parking lot (adjacent to pool)
  • Old Fire House Teen Center
  • Old Redmond Schoolhouse
  • Idylwood Park

Sports fields are also closed and all activities at Hartman, Perrigo, and Grass Lawn are canceled.

SAFETY INFORMATION:

If you see a downed power line, stay as far away as you can. Power lines can charge the ground at the point of contact and may cause electrocution. Call 911 or report it to Puget Sound Energy at 1-888-225-5773.

To prevent fires or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning:

  • Always run generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from windows, doors, and attached garages.
  • Install battery-powered CO monitors on every level of your home.
  • Never use a gas stove for heat.
  • Never use a grill indoors.
  • Use flashlights instead of candles.

Keep your fridge and freezer closed. A full freezer can stay frozen for up to 48 hours unopened. A refrigerator can keep food cold for about four hours if it is left shut. Monitor temperatures and throw out food that spoils.

Check PSE's outage map to find restoration times and other information.
