Honoring Indigenous Peoples Day

Honoring Indigenous Peoples Day

Today is the second Monday of October, a time when the United States and City of Redmond celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. The holiday honors and recognizes the ongoing traditions and cultures, as well as histories of the first people of this land.

In 2023, President Biden issued a Presidential Proclamation celebrating the day, stating in part, “On Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor the perseverance and courage of Indigenous peoples, show our gratitude for the myriad contributions they have made to our world, and renew our commitment to respect Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.”

Redmond City Council wants to hear from you as it considers taking a position on Washington state ballot initiative 2066. If approved, I-2066 would repeal or prohibit certain laws and regulations that discourage natural gas use or promote electrification, and require certain utilities and local governments to provide natural gas to eligible customers. Join City Council for a public hearing and to share your comments at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Oct. 15, during Council’s regular business meeting at Redmond City Hall.

Celebrate Green Redmond Day

The Forest Stewards have been diligently clearing areas along Viewpoint Open Space Trail this summer in preparation for the annual volunteer party. Join us from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, to help plant trees along the trail. Tools, gloves, and instruction are provided and no experience is needed. Volunteers should dress for the weather and in clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. Our volunteers make a huge difference in our parks and our community.

You can take part in another opportunity the same day to preserve our land on Green Redmond Day by joining us from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to restore a 4.5-acre park located along Bear Creek, and the trail which was constructed in 2006 along the west side of Bear Creek. This volunteer work includes planting native plants and possibly plant protection. Registration is required. EarthCorps supplies gloves, tools, water, and snack bars. Give Blood to Save Lives

The City is partnering with Bloodworks Northwest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, to host a blood drive in the Redmond City Hall parking lot (15670 NE 85th Street). October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of research on the disease, mourn the ones we’ve lost, and do our part to help people who are fighting now. Among the many powerful procedures, medications, and operations involved in cancer treatment, one essential element that only volunteer donors can provide is blood. On donation day, look for the Bloodmobile, and please arrive with your photo ID.
