Redmond Mayor Angela Birney Introduces Preliminary 2025 – 2026 Budget
REDMOND, WA - On Tuesday, Oct. 1, Redmond Mayor Angela Birney introduced the preliminary 2025-2026 biennial budget at the regular business meeting of the City Council. Over the next several weeks, Council will review and discuss the draft budget ahead of the final budget adoption, which is expected on Thursday, Nov. 21.
“This budget is the result of amazing work by city staff, Council, and the community,” said Redmond Mayor Angela Birney. “Together we have created a budget led by the community’s priorities that will continue to make Redmond an equitable, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable community that embraces the energy and vitality that comes from growth.”
Mayor Birney provided an introduction and an overview of the budget in a letter and executive summary. The full budget can be viewed at redmond.gov/Budget. Some highlights of this budget include:
- Investing additional resources in a comprehensive community response program that provides behavioral health and human services.
- Implementing maintenance and safety operations for light rail.
- Protecting the environment by advancing the City's decarbonization, e-mobility, and green building efforts.
- Increasing the investment in public safety equipment and resources to support the Vision Zero initiative.
- Welcoming the 2026 FIFA World Cup to Redmond and the Puget Sound Region.
- Promoting respect, equity, diversity, and inclusion with real-time language translation services and communication resources.
The City continues to seek community feedback on the preliminary budget and will host two additional public hearings on the 2025-2026 budget at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, and Monday, Nov. 4, during the regular business meeting of the City Council. In addition to public hearings, community members can share their feedback about the budget through Items from the Audience at the Council’s regular business meetings on the first and third Tuesdays of the month or by email at budget@redmond.gov.
Several budget study sessions are also scheduled during which the City Council will discuss various budgeting topics. The community is invited to attend study sessions or view them remotely. Redmond uses the Budgeting by Priorities process to form the City’s biennial budget. This process identifies the community’s highest priority services. The 2025-2026 preliminary budget continues to advance the values of our community distilled in four budget priorities confirmed by the community annually since 2020:
- A healthy and sustainable environment that supports an active community.
- A safe and resilient community where all people feel safe.
- A strategic and responsive community that is welcoming, service-oriented, and fiscally responsible.
- A well-planned and supported community that is vibrant and connected and that provides a sense of place.
