Relish in the Dog Days of Summer

In this month’s Here in Redmond video, we visit with some of our tail-wagging, four-legged residents to learn about their love for our Luke McRedmond and Hartman Park pop-up dog parks. The spaces were created based on community need and developed into gathering places and connection points among dog owners.

Juneteenth 2024

Recognizing Juneteenth

City facilities will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth and will reopen to the community at 8 a.m. on Thursday, June 20. Juneteenth is a federal holiday, recognizing June 19, 1865, as the day enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, received news that legalized slavery had ended two and a half years prior. The magnitude of this holiday honoring the legacy and numerous contributions of the enslaved to our American story is significant. It is worthy of pause and reflection, as we acknowledge the social strife existing for generations throughout the country based on race as a social construct in justifying the validity of racism during slavery and beyond.

Making a Difference on the Eastside Through a Clean Energy Program

Making a Difference on the Eastside Through a Clean Energy Program

Redmond and the Eastside cities were awarded a $3.15 million dollar grant to support the Energy Smart Eastside program. The funding, made possible by Washington’s Climate Commitment Act, will specifically fund heat pump installations and rebates for low and moderate-income community members to accelerate the clean energy transition. Two residences that recently benefitted from the Energy Smart Eastside program were Acres of Diamonds and Hopelink in Issaquah. Last week, Redmond’s Environmental Sustainability Program Manager, Jenny Lybeck, joined Governor Inslee and representatives from other Energy Smart Eastside cities at Acres of Diamonds to highlight these projects. The program to date has completed 263 heat pump installations, 72% of which are in low and moderate-income households. With the additional Climate Commitment Act funding announced from the Department of Commerce and Puget Sound Energy, Energy Smart Eastside anticipates incentivizing another 400 heat pump installations in the next twelve months. All electric heat pumps are a critical strategy for decreasing emissions from buildings and increasing community resilience during hot summer days.

Be Kind to Birds, Bats, Butterflies, and Bees

Be Kind to Birds, Bats, Butterflies, and Bees

Pollinators help bring us one out of every three bites of food. About 75% of all flowering plant species need animal pollinators for reproduction, and you can help protect them in your yard or garden. Support the birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and small mammals that support us this Pollinator Week, June 17 - 23.

Did you know that Redmond celebrates pollinators year-round? We recently implemented a number of initiatives to increase climate resiliency, including the growth of pollinator gardens and roadside meadows.
