New Redmond Senior & Community Center Set to Host Grand Opening Celebrations
Redmond's new community gathering place will open in May
REDMOND, WA - Join the City of Redmond in celebrating the opening of the new Redmond Senior & Community Center with a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3. Additionally, there will be a grand opening event for the community with activities and entertainment for the whole family from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. Both events will be held at the new building adjacent to City Hall on Redmond’s Municipal Campus at 8703 160th Avenue NE.
“Spaces where people can gather play a vital role in building connection in our communities and help provide access to recreational opportunities, cultural experiences, and social interactions, as well as promote inclusivity,” said Mayor Angela Birney. “This building was designed with the community and by the community, and I’m thrilled for the opening so that our residents can gather, play, and recreate together in this stunning state-of-the-art facility.”
Behind the scenes, staff have been planning for programming and operations, hiring new staff for the facility, and ensuring the center is fully equipped. Daily operations and regular programming will begin on Monday, May 6. The center will host a range of classes for all ages, offer an equally large variety of fitness programs, and a new state-of-the-art Fitness Zone and Gymnasium. The 52,000-square-foot building will be open from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Saturdays. While the building will be closed on Sundays, it is available for facility rentals seven days a week.
The City began robust outreach for the project in 2020, which confirmed Redmond’s need for a larger center to serve the entire community with cultural arts, events, multigenerational recreation experiences, and gathering space.
While the City prides itself on the innovation and talent of the community that will fill the space, the new Redmond Senior & Community Center is equally distinguished, having earned the first-ever recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council for sourcing wood from climate-resilient forestry. The Council, which manages the LEED certification process, awarded an innovation point during the process and lauded Opsis Architecture and Sustainable NW for verifying that wood came from forests managed sustainably. The building also utilized efficient energy-conserving systems and rooftop solar panels, which will provide up to 50% of the building’s electricity.
