Redmond Police Department Implements New Tool to Identify Drugs
REDMOND, WA - The Redmond Police Department has a new tool to test unknown substances without exposing officers to dangerous drugs.
The handheld narcotics analyzer uses a laser to scan through transparent packaging and identify the chemical composition of more than 530 controlled substances, such as fentanyl, methamphetamine, and heroin. Officers can quickly get an accurate readout of known drugs while avoiding direct contact, minimizing contamination, reducing exposure, and preserving evidence.
The analyzer captures all scan results, including time and date stamps. The technology can be easily updated to identify emerging drug threats that could pose dangerous situations for officers.
“Redmond Police takes the growing drug problem seriously and is committed to keeping drugs off the streets,” Redmond Police Chief Darrell Lowe said. “This new tool reduces the handling of dangerous narcotics and minimizes the risks to our officers’ health while helping keep our community safe.”
The system costs around $31,000 and is paid for by the Washington State opioid settlement funds. The Redmond Police Department received these funds to address the opioid crisis and improve treatment options.
