Americans of Chinese Descent Month

Honoring Americans of Chinese Descent Month

This January, Washington state recognizes the first Americans of Chinese Descent Month after Governor Jay Inslee signed it into law on May 9, 2023. Throughout the month of January, public schools in the state are encouraged to commemorate the lives, achievements, and contributions of Chinese Americans. In Redmond, we celebrate our community members of Chinese descent and thank them for their contributions. Washington is the first state nationwide to recognize this month.

Salmon

Read about Successful Conservation Efforts

Redmond is part of a coalition working to protect Kokanee, a rare type of sockeye salmon found in Lake Sammamish. Like other salmon runs in our area, the Kokanee are vulnerable to a variety of threats, and Redmond has collaborated with others in the region to protect the lake’s water quality and Kokanee-bearing streams. In 2017 and 2018, only 19 of these fish were counted during spawning surveys, but there is some good news in this year's early survey results – over 250 fish have been counted! This sample indicates that conservation efforts are helping restore Kokanee in Lake Sammamish.
