November 2023 Newsletter
Your monthly update from the City of Redmond Emergency Management.
Winter weather is approaching, and one of the important preparedness tasks you can do is prepare for power outages. These can happen anytime but are more common in fall and winter due to storms.
- Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy. Don’t rely on your cell phone flashlight, as you will want to save that battery for communication.
- Have backup sources for all critical medical equipment, including any refrigerated medications.
- Have a charged power backup battery to charge your phone and other devices. These come in a variety of sizes, so check the capacity of each backup. Some can recharge your devices several times. Others only give it one boost.
- To preserve your cellphone battery, use your phone sparingly. Text instead of voice calls to communicate with friends and family.
- If you use a generator, follow all safety requirements, and never operate indoors.
- Keep refrigerator doors closed as much as possible. Use perishable items first. Don’t eat any food that is no longer safe to consume due to warming temperatures.
Check-in on your neighbors and help each other cope with an outage. If your power is expected to be out for a few days, consider staying with a friend or family member outside of the outage area. Make sure your vehicle is prepared for travel.
- Keep your car charged or the gas tank filled.
- Learn how to open your garage door manually.
- Check your tires, chains, and windshield wipers to ensure they are ready for the season.
- Update your car Go Bag to see that it contains water, food, cash, and warm sturdy clothes and shoes.
- If you rely on mobile map apps, consider putting a paper map in your car to help with directions.
Puget Sound Energy provides outage updates at PSE Outage Map. At this site, you can:

If you come across a downed power line, keep clear of it by at least 35 feet. Assume it is energized and may electrocute you. Take the time now to prepare for winter weather and possible power outages.
