Your weekly update from the City of Redmond.
Welcome to Redmond, K9 Officer Chewie!
Today, May 15, is National Police Dog Day, and we are pleased to introduce the newest member of the Redmond Police Department, K9 Officer Chewbacca (Chewie), a three-year-old German Shepherd who joined the City on May 4. Chewie and his handler, Officer Zach Perkins, completed 400 hours of training before graduation.
Join Us in Observing National Police Week
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officer Memorial Day and the week in which May 15 falls is now recognized as National Police Week. This year, May 14 – 20, is a time to celebrate and thank those who have dedicated their lives to protecting the community and honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Thank you to the members of the Redmond Police Department who work tirelessly to keep our community safe.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to increase public understanding of mental health, reduce stigma, and promote access to resources and support. Mental health impacts everyone.
Join Redmond Parks and Recreation staff and local volunteers on June 3, for a National Trails Day work party to spread gravel along the 172nd Avenue Trail near Redmond High School. Wear comfortable clothes to work in and bring a can-do attitude, and we will supply the tools and refreshments. All are welcome. No experience is required.
Do you love to garden, but need a space to call your own? Community gardens offer a way to connect with your community while growing your own fruits, vegetables, and other plants. The City of Redmond offers garden plots and shed space for seasonal lease to community members. The garden plots are available from March to October.
Avoid Costly Repairs – Maintain Your Side Sewer and Drain
The side sewer is the pipe that carries sewage from a building to a city sewage pipe. It belongs to the property owner, and damage to it can cause serious and expensive problems. Prevent backups by keeping rain out of your side sewer and not flushing or putting materials down your drain.
You can also avoid clogged pipes and expensive repairs by disposing of fats, oils, and grease properly. Cool it. Can it. Trash it. Recycle cooking oil for free at the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village, 6505 176th Avenue NE.
