REDMOND, WA - Through a new lease agreement with the Lake Washington School District (LWSD), the City of Redmond will have access to 9,785 square feet of the Old Redmond Schoolhouse building beginning in early 2021. The lease includes use of the gymnasium, clay studio, and two flexible spaces. One space will be sub-leased by the City to the Redmond Historical Society.

“The City values the longstanding joint use facilities partnership we have with the Lake Washington School District,” said Mayor Angela Birney. “We share a vision to create spaces where residents can enjoy a vibrant selection of activities, classes, and opportunities to connect across neighborhoods and cultures, while contributing to living healthier lives.”

The Old Redmond Schoolhouse was the City’s community center between 2000-2017, through a previous inter-local agreement with LWSD. In 2016, the City received notice regarding the lease expiration in 2018. In 2017, the City signed an agreement with Lake Washington Institute of Technology to lease the 20,000 square foot Redmond campus building, which is now referred to as the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village. The City relocated many activities and services, but space limitations and lack of gymnasium space resulted in the loss of some programs and local partnerships.

As Redmond continues to grow, space continues to be in high demand. The closure of the Redmond Senior Center in September 2019 created urgency in the need for space, as no City facilities provide large enough space for events, performances, cultural gatherings, or indoor sport functions.
