Redmond, WA – The City of Redmond is encouraging artists to join the free Public Art Intensive Eastside program, a workshop series for visual artists to learn how to translate their work into the public realm. Redmond is committed to equity and inclusion, and the Public Art Intensive Eastside program is designed to bridge opportunities for under-represented groups by creating access to information and opportunities in the public art field. Artists selected to participate in this program will have an opportunity to apply for up to four temporary public art projects for the City, averaging $2,500 each.

The City of Redmond has partnered with Elisheba Johnson to help bring seasoned public artists to facilitate workshop classes that include fabrication, contracting, design concepts, and social practice. Ms. Johnson is a curator and public artist. She worked for the Seattle Office of Arts and Culture on capacity building initiatives, racial equity in public art, and co-led the Public Art Bootcamp. She is currently co-owner of Wa Na Wari, a Black art center in Seattle.

“The City is excited to offer this unique opportunity to help emerging public artists create culturally diverse and relevant work for our community,” said Redmond Mayor Angela Birney. “I look forward to following the successes of the Public Art Intensive Eastside program and our local artists.”

Public Art Intensive Eastside is open to visual artists who are 18 years and older living in and around Redmond and have not received a public art commission over $5,000. Artists must apply online to be considered. Applications are available through the City of Redmond’s website, www.redmond.gov/Public-Art-Intensive, and will be accepted through Monday, August 17, 2020. Those interested in learning more about the opportunity are invited to a Q&A webinar, via Zoom, on July 28 at 6:30 p.m. Please email lvelasco@redmond.gov to register for the workshop. The workshop will be recorded and made available on the Arts and Culture webpage, www.redmond.gov/Arts, after July 28.
