Redmond, WA – Applications are now being accepted for the 2019 Derby Do-Gooder Scholarship award, presented by Waste Management. Currently in its fifth year, the Derby Do-Gooder Scholarship will be awarded as a part of the Derby Days summer festival, happening in Redmond July 12 & 13. The scholarship will award $1,500 to a high school senior in Redmond who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to local community service. In addition to the scholarship funds, the recipient will also be honored with an appearance in the Derby Days Grand Parade, Saturday, July 13, 2019.

“For Waste Management, this is all about community partnership,” said Emily Newcomer, Waste Management’s Public Sector Solutions Manager. “We consider it a privilege to serve the City of Redmond and to sponsor the Do-Gooder Scholarship. The scholarship is a fabulous way for Waste Management to recognize students who are helping to build our community and advance sustainability.”

The Derby Do-Gooder Scholarship opportunity is just one of the ways that volunteerism is ingrained throughout the annual Derby Days event. Volunteer opportunities include assisting with the Derby Dash 5k Run/Walk, event set-up and tear-down, event information booth, surveys, and more.

“At the heart of volunteerism is the desire to build community, connect with others, and make a positive mark on those around us. While Derby Days is an opportunity to celebrate all of Redmond, this scholarship recognizes one special individual whose commitment to volunteerism reflects the values at the root of Derby Days and our community,” said Mayor John Marchione.

The Do-Gooder Scholarship application and more information about volunteer opportunities are available at RedmondDerbyDays.com. The scholarship application deadline is May 19, with a recipient announcement of June 14.
