August 22, 2018

Lisa Maher, Communications & Marketing Manager

Redmond, WA – Western Washington members of the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 302 went on strike yesterday, and some of City of Redmond’s construction projects are being affected. The City currently has 17 public projects in construction. Five projects are already slowed or stopped because of the strike, and four more will be impacted if the strike lasts more than a couple of weeks. The two most visible projects are Safe Routes to school project that is adding a sidewalk on Redmond-Woodinville road and the NE 31st street widening project near 156th Ave NE by Microsoft. Some work is still progressing but concrete pours and asphalt repairs will not occur or will be significantly limited by striking operators with the suppliers.

Projects Impacted

  1. Mackey Creek (located in Farrell McWhirter Park) - operators are not doing excavation
  2. Safe Routes (Redwood Road near NE 109th) - no delivery of concrete barriers and concrete for sidewalk pours
  3. Ramp Split – (NE 40th and NE 51st and 520) – August 20 start will be delayed
  4. NE 31st – (near 156th Ave NE) – not pouring curbs, signal cabinet bases and no asphalt patching
  5. Pressure reducing valve replacement project (10 locations throughout city) – not pouring curbs and no asphalt restoration work

Projects that may be impacted if strike continues more than 2 weeks

  1. 9800 Redwood – project recently started
  2. Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center – fiber trenching work could be impacted
  3. NE 76th Groundwater (near 178th Ave NE) - about to start
  4. 2018 Sidewalk (on NE 83rd near 160th Ave NE) - about to start

Projects that don’t appear on either of these lists are not currently affected. For questions and more information on this press release contact Lisa Maher, Communications & Marketing Manager, at or 425-556-2427. This press release is available on
