Redmond, WA – The City is hosting the 2018 Archaeology Day on Friday, April 27 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Redmond City Hall (15670 NE 85th Street).

Environmental Science Associates (ESA) Archaeologist, Jenny Dellert is the keynote speaker and will highlight information learned from the Bear Creek site including how it relates to others in the Redmond vicinity and Western Washington. The educational presentation will kick off the event at 5:00 p.m. Following the keynote presentation, several students from the Lake Washington School District Tesla STEM High School will also present their research regarding the Bear Creek site and tribal culture and history. Participants will have the opportunity to learn more about Bear Creek and visit with the students as they present their research projects on topics such as traditional food systems, pre-contact travel patterns and the importance of animals.

“Archaeology Day provides a unique educational opportunity for student to learn more about the history surrounding Redmond,” said Mayor John Marchione. “I want to invite the community to join us at City Hall to learn more about the site and show their support for local students’ research efforts.”

The Bear Creek site, located in the heart of the City of Redmond, is the oldest excavated archaeological site with stone tools in Western Washington. It was first identified in 2008 during a routine environmental survey for a City habitat restoration project, and has generated a wealth of information about Native American life from over 10,000 years ago near the outlet of Lake Sammamish.
