Legal services, real estate overview on Thursday’s agenda

At their Thursday meeting, commissioners are expected to consider two contracts for legal services.

The two contracts with Goodstein Law Group include a four-year agreement for general legal services and a one-year agreement to provide legal support for the Port’s real estate and commercial activities.

The agenda also includes requests for improvements to the Port’s log terminal and the roof of the administration building. A study session providing an overview of the Port’s real estate strategy follows the action agenda.

Commission meetings begin at noon in Room 104 of the Fabulich Center, 3600 Port of Tacoma Road. Meetings are streamed live from the Port's website.

State transportation funding package in jeopardy

Reports from Olympia indicate negotiations in the Washington State Legislature for a statewide transportation revenue package stalled during the past week. The package would fund the completion of State Route 167 between Tacoma and Puyallup.

Negotiators met Monday and are scheduled to meet again Wednesday, but insiders are pessimistic about the prospects of an agreement. The state’s lack of freight mobility investments in the face of increasing competitive threats from outside of Washington have many port industry leaders worried.

Pile driving will cause noise in Blair Waterway

A Port of Tacoma construction project could get noisy as contractors drive piling to upgrade the crane rails at Husky Terminal at the north end of the Blair Waterway.

Orion Marine Group of Tacoma plans to work from about 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays through early February 2014, ending before the annual fish migration season begins. Residents near this work might hear pounding noises as the 130-foot-long concrete pilings are set into place.

This project is one phase of the terminal upgrades approved by the Port Commission earlier this year, intended to make strategic infrastructure investments that enhance the Port’s waterway and marine terminal infrastructures to attract future business opportunities.

Road repairs near breakbulk terminal to detour traffic Thursday

City of Tacoma road repairs on the Blair-Hylebos Peninsula Thursday will detour drivers from Lincoln Avenue to East 11th Street.

The City plans to repair the road at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Alexander Way on the northeast side of the Blair Waterway, near the Port-operated East Blair One breakbulk terminal.

Lincoln Avenue will be closed Thursday from Alexander Avenue to Taylor Way, with local access only provided on Lincoln Avenue. Flaggers will direct Lincoln Avenue traffic to the detour at East 11th Street.

The work is weather dependent. For more information, contact Rich Barber, project supervisor with the City of Tacoma, at 253-591-5497.

Tacoma terminals closed for Christmas, New Year’s Day

All Port of Tacoma terminals are expected to be closed Dec. 25 for the Christmas holiday and Jan. 1, 2014, for the New Year’s Day holiday.

The Port-operated East Blair One breakbulk terminal will also be closed Dec. 24 and close at 3 p.m. Dec. 31. Other terminals are expected to be closed or close early Dec. 24 and Dec. 31. Find each terminal’s holiday schedule on their websites:

For questions about East Blair One, contact the Port's customer service department at 253-383-9424 (exports) or 253-383-9429 (imports).

The Port’s Administration Building will also be closed Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1 for the holidays.
