At their Thursday meeting, commissioners are expected to consider requests for continued environmental cleanup work on the Hylebos Waterway and a new 20-year operating agreement with Tacoma Rail.
Commissioners will also consider requests to permanently extend the heavy haul corridor along State Route 509 and for international commission travel. Study sessions on the 2013 update to the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy and the Port’s land use and transportation plan follow the action items.

Tom Bellerud, director of container terminal business, talked with Pierce County TV last week about the how Grand Alliance’s move to Tacoma last summer is positively impacting our community.
Bellerud also shared the investments we are making in our infrastructure to prepare for the larger vessels expected to call Tacoma in the future, as well as our continued commitment to diversify our cargo mix. Watch the 2-minute video.
The ports of Tacoma, Seattle and Metro Vancouver, B.C., aim to reduce overall maritime-related diesel emissions 70 percent by 2015 and 75 percent by 2020.
The goals are part of the draft 2013 update to the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, a collaborative effort the three ports launched in 2008 to improve the region’s air quality. View the draft update on our website.

The Horizon Lines vessel Horizon Reliance received the IHS Safety at Sea AMVER Award June 13. The vessel rescued three sailors from a drifting yacht amid difficult conditions in February 2012.
The AMVER award is made in partnership with the Coast Guard’s Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) program. The IHS awards program celebrates the role safety managers and manufacturers play in saving and protecting life at sea.
Horizon Lines is one of two domestic shipping lines serving the Alaska trade from Tacoma.
Join Citizens for a Healthy Bay July 20 for the sixth annual shoreline cleanup along Marine View Drive in Tacoma.
Volunteer from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to pick up plastic bags, Styrofoam, abandoned fishing nets and other debris on the shoreline and in the water between Tyee Marina and the Hylebos Bridge. Volunteers are welcome to walk, kayak or paddleboard. Last year, 15 cubic yards of material was removed. Snacks and lunch will be provided.

Business leaders from across the state will hear an update on Congressional trade policy and upcoming opportunities at the Washington Council on International Trade (WCIT) Summer Trade Luncheon Aug. 8.
Under the theme “The Trade Policy View from D.C.,” the event features a panel discussion with leading Washington, D.C., trade policy advocates. The event is scheduled to run from noon to 1:30 p.m.
