September 2011

Port container volumes remain slightly up
The Port of Tacoma's year-to-date container volumes through August are up 2 percent, with the Port handling 963,537 TEUs. Full export container volumes are up 15 percent year-to-date through August, reflecting the continued strength of lumber, hay and forage exports.

Full import container volumes are down 2 percent for that same time period. The lack of U.S. consumer confidence, due to economic uncertainty, is also contributing to the decline of Asian imports up and down the West Coast. In August, the U.S. consumer confidence level was at its lowest point since February 2009.

Other year-to-date cargo highlights include:

  • Auto imports (units) are up 50 percent, reflecting strong Kia sales and the auto production rebound in Japan.
  • Breakbulk tonnage is up 69 percent, driven by the strength of agricultural and construction machinery exports.

Tacoma ScRAPS program aims to improve air quality
Funding is available to help truck drivers purchase newer, lower-emission trucks to meet the standards of the Port of Tacoma Clean Truck Program and improve regional air quality. Currently, all trucks serving Port terminals are required to have 1994 or newer engines, and by 2015, trucks are required to have 2007 or newer engines.

The office for the Tacoma Truck Scrappage and Replacement for Air in Puget Sound (Tacoma ScRAPS) is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 2002 Stewart Street in Tacoma. Operated through a partnership between the City of Tacoma and Cascade Sierra Solutions (CSS), the program provides funding to truckers who scrap and replace an older truck. For more information, contact CSS at 253-617-3201.

Tacoma chamber offers online certificates of origin
In early September, the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber started offering the eCertify online electronic Certificate of Origin service to member and non-member exporting companies.

This online service, which greatly increases efficiencies and security, is more expeditious and fully complies with regulations. To register and begin the eCertify electronic program, visit the chamber's website.

The eCertify system is a user-friendly online solution that works with any documentation software, and enables exporters and freight forwarders to create, submit and collect electronic certificates of origin from their desktop. This eliminates costly courier fees, reducing administration costs and errors while providing faster turnaround. For more information, contact Gary Brackett at garyb@tacomachamber.org.
