Welcome to the February edition of the SBE Round-Up!
Here's a recap of some things the Board has been up to this month:
Dyson has served as a director on the Onion Creek School Board since 1985 and spent 12 years as Chair of the Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) Small Schools Committee. In that role, she is proud to have led visits to every Washington school district with fewer than 2,000 students—more than 220 districts at the time. In 2018, Dyson received WSSDA’s Hero in Education Award in recognition of her sustained and extraordinary support for public education, becoming one of only five individuals to receive the organization’s highest honor.
The seat Dyson was appointed to fill became vacant after the individual originally elected to the position stepped down to continue serving in their school district. Under procedures for filling Board vacancies, when a vacancy occurs among elected members “from any cause whatsoever,” the remaining Board members elected by public school boards of directors must fill the vacancy by appointment, subject to full Board approval.

Are you a current sophomore ready to use your voice to shape education in Washington? The Washington State Board of Education is looking for its next student board member and we’re hosting a live webinar to share everything you need to know.
Join us on Tuesday, March 3 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for a conversation with current student board members. During the webinar, students will hear what it’s like to serve on the Board, get answers to questions they have, and learn how to apply for the 2026–2028 term.
Do you know any students who might be interested in serving on the Board and/or attending the wbinar? Help us share this event on Instagram and Facebook.
The State Board of Education met for its regularly scheduled meeting at the Coach House in Olympia, WA, on February 11-12. Find the complete agenda, supporting materials, and links to TVW’s video footage of the meeting on SBE’s meeting site. You can also view our February Meeting Recap newsletter here.
The Board approved its 2026 Charter Schools Report on February 12.
The Board is required to issue an annual report on the performance of Washington’s public charter schools (RCW 28A.710.250). Now in its ninth year, this report includes information from annual charter school authorizer reports submitted to the Board as well as additional relevant data compiled by the Board for the 2024–25 school year.

We have been hard at work preparing for this year’s annual private school approval process. Links to both the Renewing and New School Approval Applications will be posted March 2 on the Private School Approval webpage. You can learn more about the approval timeline here.
Under RCW 28A.195.010, the Legislature mandates that the State Board of Education (SBE) annually approve private schools to operate in Washington. These schools must maintain a program that ensures a sufficient basic education for students to meet usual state graduation requirements and meet reasonable standards for health and safety of private school students.
Board staff will be hosting virtual office hours via Zoom every Wednesday in March from 12:00-12:30 p.m. Join us on Zoom during the designated time. School personnel are encouraged to stop in with any questions they might have.
