Welcome to the November edition of the SBE Round-Up!
Here's a recap of some things the Board has been up to this month:
Join the State Board of Education and League of Education Voters for a webinar on December 18, 12:30-1:30, and learn how the Board is partnering with communities across Washington to modernize the state's high school diploma so every student gains the real-world knowledge and skills they need to thrive.
During the webinar, members of the State Board and FutureReady partners will share what they’ve learned so far from students, families, educators, and community organizations across Washington. Together, they will cover:
-
How FutureReady is identifying the academic knowledge and real-world skills students need to succeed in today’s world.
-
Where Washington’s current graduation framework falls short in meeting students’ needs, and how it can be made easier to navigate and more meaningful for every student.
-
The work ahead as the Board develops its proposal for the legislature’s 2027 session.
-
How the public can engage in the process and provide input.
We'd appreciate your help sharing our social media posts and forwarding the invite to folks you think might be interested. View our posts on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
Three decades ago, Bill Kallappa II began his career in education as a playground monitor for the Tumwater School District.
Now in his final year of service on the Washington State Board of Education, Bill — a member of the Makah Tribe and the first adult Native American to serve on the Board — sat down with us to reflect on his career, his legacy, and give his advice for young Native students aspiring to leadership in education.

We wanted to acknowledge the passing of Dr. Bernal Baca on Friday, November 28, and recognize his lifetime of service to students across Washington.
Dr. Baca was a lifelong teacher, organizer, and community builder who worked tirelessly on behalf of Latino and Indigenous families and communities. He was an active member of the State Board of Education from February 2006 - January 2013 and was influential in shaping our work during that time.
Most recently, Dr. Baca served as a member of the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, an executive committee member of the Washington State Hispanic Affairs Commission, and the executive director of Mi Centro, a community-based nonprofit that provides social services and educational programming to Latino and Indigenous communities in Pierce County.
We send our condolences to Dr. Baca's family, friends, and colleagues.
Randy Spaulding, Executive Director of the Washington State Board of Education, was recently selected to serve as an ex officio member on the board of the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE).

NCSBEE is a national organization that provides support and professional development for individuals who assist state boards of education.
