The State Board of Education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting virtually over Zoom on August 13-14.
On Wednesday, the Board will swear in its newest student representative, Riley Acheson. Afterward, members will discuss legislative platform priorities for the 2026 session. To close the day, the Board will receive a presentation from staff on the status of FutureReady, the Board’s initiative to modernize high school graduation requirements, and consider recommendations from the FutureReady Task Force regarding the formation of potential subcommittees.
On Thursday, the Board will work with staff to discuss the development of its Centennial Accord Plan for Tribal Consultation. After a brief break, members will receive a presentation on the annual basic education compliance certification process and review a list of school districts recommended for approval later in the meeting. The Board will then review the final draft of its 2025 High School and Beyond Plan Recommendations Report, which is also scheduled for approval later that day. In addition, the Board will vote to approve a list of standardized achievement tests that parents providing home-based instruction may use to demonstrate academic progress. To conclude the meeting, the Board will elect new officers to serve on the Executive Committee.

FutureReady Work Session
During the FutureReady Task Force's July meeting, the group identified gaps in Washington’s current graduation requirement framework, suggested a number of possible policy levers that could be used to address those gaps, and proposed several subcommittees to further explore the gaps.
In this segment, Board members will review the Task Force’s discussion takeaways and consider whether the proposed subcommittees align with the needs of the FutureReady Initiative. Members will also begin developing key questions for the subcommittees to consider.

Basic Education Annual Certification Process
Each year, the Board is responsible for certifying whether school districts and Local Education Agencies (LEAs) are in compliance with the minimum instructional program of basic education, as outlined in RCW 28A.150.220 and 28A.150.250.
School districts and LEAs report their compliance with these requirements for the upcoming school year through an SBE-managed survey, due annually on September 15. Survey responses received by July 16 were reviewed by staff, and 96 school districts and LEAs will be recommended for certification for the 2025–26 school year during this meeting. Survey responses submitted after July 16 but before the September 15 deadline will be reviewed for approval at the Board’s October 2025 meeting.
2025 High School & Beyond Plan Recommendations Report
The High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP) is one of three components required to earn a Washington State high school diploma, alongside credit and subject area requirements and graduation pathway options. The HSBP is designed to help students explore and plan their secondary and post-secondary education, training, and career pathways.
In 2023, the Legislature passed SSB 5243, which strengthened the HSBP and directed SBE to provide recommendations to the Governor and Legislature on how the HSBP can be improved to better support student choice and flexibility in meeting graduation requirements. Over the past year, Board staff have engaged with community members across the state to develop these recommendations. During this meeting, the Board will review the final recommendations and vote to adopt the 2025 High School and Beyond Plan Recommendations Report.
The public comment period is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13 and 8:35 a.m. on Thursday, August 14.
