May 2025 Recap: Highlighted Updates from SBE |
|
Welcome to the May edition of the SBE Round-Up!
Here's a recap of some things the Board has been up to this month:
The Board hosted the Mastery-Based Learning Collaborative Spring Gathering on May 6, 2025. Educators and administrators representing 47 different schools gathered at Central Washington University to reflect on the work done by the collaborative over the past few years and to engage in powerful professional development opportunities. Attendees also had the chance to learn directly from students during a compelling student fishbowl session.
The gathering also marked the official “graduation” of 20 schools that were part of the MBLC’s first cohort. We are incredibly proud of the work these schools have done over the past few years to build culturally responsive, mastery-based learning environments where every student can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We are thankful for the example they have set.
What is the MBLC?
The MBLC is an initiative launched in 2021 by the State Board of Education. It supports schools in implementing culturally responsive and sustaining mastery-based learning (MBL) — a personalized instructional approach designed to help students learn deeply and effectively. The initiative provides professional learning, shares tools and practices, and informs future policy decisions by highlighting what high-quality MBL looks like, how long it takes, and what resources are needed—ultimately helping schools create more equitable and meaningful learning experiences for all students.

On May 22, 2025, the FutureReady Task Force held its third meeting virtually via Zoom.
In the morning, members worked to develop a shared consensus on a vision to guide the work of the task force and the Board.
In the afternoon, the task force began laying the groundwork for a gap analysis by reviewing background data presented by State Board of Education (SBE) staff and the Washington State Education Research & Data Center (ERDC). Following the presentation, the task force discussed initial reflections on how current graduation requirements may fall short of the shared vision.
The task force’s next meeting is scheduled for July 24, 2025. It will be held virtually via Zoom. A link will be posted on our task force webpage when available.
