-
The Board will receive an update from SBE staff on its FutureReady initiative and learn more about discussions that took place during the FutureReady Task Force's March meeting. Afterwards, Board members will provide input for the task force to consider at its next meeting. FutureReady is the Board’s multi-year effort to update Washington’s high school graduation requirements, with a legislative proposal expected in 2027. To guide this work, the Board has convened a 35-member task force representing students, families, educators, community partners employers, and policymakers. Click here to learn more about the initiative.
- The Board will receive a presentation from staff at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction on the State's Required Action District (RAD) program. The update will include progress reports on currently designated RAD districts and schools, as well as recommendations for designating additional districts that have been participating in the RAD introductory cohort.
- SBE staff will provide an update on the current status of the Washington State School Recognition Program. The presentation will include a brief overview of the program’s purpose and background, along with a review of preliminary data for the 2023–2024 honorees. Click here to learn more about the program.
- The Board will review a draft of the Annual Report on Public Charter Schools and provide feedback to staff. This report summarizes information submitted by each charter school authorizer, along with additional data compiled by Board staff. It highlights successes, identifies challenges, and outlines areas for improvement within the charter school sector. At a later meeting, the Board will review a separate report that examines the academic performance of students attending public charter schools in comparison to their peers in traditional public schools.
- The Board will vote to approve updated rules for private school accreditation. If approved as proposed, these rules would allow private schools to be exempt from Department of Children, Youth, and Family licensing requirements if the school and its student living accommodations are accredited by a State Board-recognized accreditor. These changes were prompted by the signing of ESSB 5515 into law during the 2023 legislative session.
The public comment period is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday April 16th and 8:10 a.m. on Thursday April 17th.
