The Board will meet on February 12-13 in Olympia for its regularly-scheduled meeting.
On Wednesday, the Board will swear in its newest board member, FutureReady initiative to update graduation requirements.
On Thursday, the Board will review a draft of its 2025 Basic Education Report and receive a presentation on the 2024-25 annual basic education certification process. The Board will then receive policy and legislative updates from Superintendent Chris Reykdal, the Governor's office, and SBE staff. Finally, the Board will end the day by continuing its discussion on FutureReady.

Jen Chong Jewell will be sworn in at the beginning of her first official meeting as a Board member. She was elected to serve as the Board’s Western Washington Position 4 representative following a runoff election administered by the Washington State School Directors’ Association. Jen was chosen by local school board members from the west side of the state and will succeed Patty Wood, who has served in the role since January 2017. Learn more about Jen here.

The Board will receive an update from SBE staff on its FutureReady initiative and learn more about discussions that took place during the FutureReady Task Force's first meeting. Afterwards, Board members will provide input for the task force to consider at its next meeting. FutureReady is the Board’s multi-year effort to update Washington’s high school graduation requirements, with a legislative proposal expected in 2027. The Board will review a draft of its 2025 Basic Education Report and receive a presentation from SBE staff on the 2024-25 annual basic education certification process. This presentation will include an overview of the data collection process and highlight notable findings. Afterwards, the Board will learn more about next steps for the 2025-26 certification process. Each year, the Board is responsible for certifying that school districts comply with the minimum instructional program of basic education per RCW 28A.150.220 and 28A.150.250. In addition to this statutory requirement, the Board compiles a yearly report using information gathered from the certification process.
The public comment period is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. on Wednesday 12th and 8:10 a.m. on Thursday 13th.
Board meetings are a limited public forum, and comments are accepted on current agenda items or matters under the Board's authority. Comments are subject to time limits (typically 2-3 minutes) and other restrictions at the Chair's discretion.
