Free naloxone for high school students

Open Doors Youth Reengagement Programs are eligible to receive free naloxone for distribution to their high school students. DOH’s Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution program has one-time funding to partner with OSPI to make this life-saving medicine available to students.

Naloxone is a safe and effective medication used to reverse opioid overdose. Anyone in Washington state can get, carry, and administer naloxone for opioid overdose response.

Open Doors Youth Reengagement Programs that wish to receive free naloxone to distribute to students must complete the Naloxone Program Application by March 1, 2025.

After application submission, a DOH staff member will contact the Open Doors program staff to discuss naloxone distribution and reporting requirements. Students will not be identified in any reporting.

Program details

DOH expects to provide 10,000 two-dose nasal naloxone kits for distribution to high school students. As this is one-time funding, future naloxone distributions will be dependent on DOH resources.

Naloxone provided by this program must be:

Made available to students in a way that allows students to bring naloxone home.
Provided to students anonymously to prevent tracking of which students obtain naloxone; for example, naloxone may be distributed via a naloxone dispending kiosk in an accessible location, such as a basket filled with naloxone kits in a student bathroom or a nurse’s office.

Follow up requirements

Schools and programs that receive naloxone from DOH will be required to report the following data each month:

The number of naloxone kits distributed in the previous month.
The number of individuals trained on overdose response in the previous month.
The number of overdose reversals reported by students who received naloxone in the previous month. (Due to the sensitive nature of this information, DOH recognizes that students may not report overdose reversals to school personnel.)

Future newsletters will contain additional information from DOH about opioid overdose recognition and response, including training and education resources and frequently asked questions about naloxone.
